Oh NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! Not an OIL thread!!! Anything but that. Please, please, please. Arrrrgggh!!!

Why would you want to start an oil thread with us? Don't you like us? Do you REALLY want to pit brother against brother? North vs. South? Cain vs. Abel? Mano a Mano?

Noooooooooooooo!!!! You can't make me do it and I absolutely refuse to be the first to say that if you don't use the oil that I use, your truck will fall apart, your dog will run away, you'll find your wife in bed with another man....wait a minute...this is starting to sound like a country western tune.

No oil opinions from ME, I can tell you that. Thank you very much, sir. I'll let the others on this site get involved in that one, you betcha'.

    Fine wine

Come on Andy- You know you want to pass on that thing about, "Oil- it's not really what kind or how much, it's if it's allowed to
    b-r-e-a-t-h-e
or not. You know- much like a fine wine has to breathe, so must the oil in your engine. I have found that the additive 'essence of grill smoke' helps this breathing process out." ;)

    Welcome HeinemeyerB,
I would ask two things of you. First, give us your name so we can use it or the above. Besides, we are a friendly bunch. We also tend to be full of it sometimes as evidenced by the previus two posts,;)
Second, I have an opinion about oil but I dare not give it for fear Nate will call me an idiot. He hasn't yet but I would like to put it off as long as possible. I am sure he will tell you soon exactly what you need and I will promptly agree with him.
    Welcome again!

Oh Zig that's really good. I've been laughing out loud since reading it. It's true. It doesn't really matter what oil you use as long as you have that special additive of which you speak. I have attached a picture to illustrate unless someone has forgotten the incident in question (NOT LIKELY). I don't think ANYONE is going to foget that one.

    LOL,

    Andy

BTW, I'm sure Nate will chime in on his thoughts on the whole oil issue. Please excuse us all while we have a little fun at each other's expense.

Andy- I'm glad to see you use charcoal! I had a gas grill given to me as a wedding present. Hated it. Sure it was cool- turn the knob, instant flame, but the flavor never quite matched charcoal and whatever wood you'd like to throw on there. When I was out at Vandy Land, (VAFB, CA) everyone threw grapevines on the bed of coals. Gave the meat a great flavor. Here it's hickory or swamp oak. (minus the swamps) No matter how you do it- there's nothing like a nice smoked...

Zig, try mesquite wood. You'll never use anything else! It burns hot and imparts a slightly sweet taste to the meat.

    Man, do we digress!

Before you think that we refuse to answer your question, 5 quarts will fill the crankcase. Do you have an oil filter, and if so, what kind because it will require oil in it too.

I've always been a fan of single weight oil in old cars and trucks. I've run 30 wt in the summers and 20 wt in the winters. Without telling you what brand, let's just say that it comes in yellow cans ;)

    So thats what its for..

I was going through my toolbox the other day and found a can opener way down in the bottom. I pondered why it was in there. I could use it as a handy little scraper, or maybe I could etch my initials on my tools with the pointy end. A little pry bar perhaps. Now I remember how much fun it was to open all those oil cans (holding my thumb over a hole until I got it over the filller just right:cool:. ) Thanks for the memories..Did you know that there is a difference in the oil molecule depending whether it came from the Pennsylvania or Texas oil fields?

    I too, am a single weight user:rolleyes: .

    The debate begins...

Sully, dead dinosaurs is dead dinosaurs! Pennsylvania grade crude, blah, blah, blah:D Speaking of dinosaurs (besides me, of course), there's a curio shop in town (Houston) that has some of the neatest stuff I've seen in my lifetime. They recently sold a Dino dinosaur promo (Sinclair gas station) for $2300. They also sold a "Big Boy" statue for about the same price! This place has auto memorabilia, vintage Coke machines, pinball machines, 50's formica tables w/ matching vinyl chairs, etc. The co-owners are in to vintage 'vettes too.

    Damn KIDS !

Am I the only one here who remembers that before thwe waxed cardboard oilcans they were _metal_ and this lasted well into the 1960's....

Oil is pretty much oil , any modern oil is magnatudes of order better that the crappo oil it was designed for so just remember : change it often like every 3,000 miles or at least twice a year regardless of how little you drive it and most important : always , ALWAYS change the oil when it's HOT . :D

Don't let anyone talk you into using non-detergent oil , EVER ! .

If you're rich , use synthetic oils and your engine will never , ever wear out . seriously .

Get a gallon jug of 90W gear oil , or 85W-90 if that's what your FLAPS carries and get the best pump you can afford for it , the pumps typically screw onto the top of the jug . fill the tranny to the edge of the filler hole , it'll need topping up every three months or so regardless of milage .

Same stuff goes in the rear end .

Fill the steering box with gear oil to the bottom of the filler hole on the top of it , never _EVER_ put grease into the steering gear .

Oil threads are usually flame wars but we don't do that here , WELCOME to our little group ~ these guys know everything about your old truck so don't hesitate to ask mundane or silly questions ! .

They stopped using all metal oil cans because...

of dipsticks like me! How many times did you put your "might" into one of those and crinkle the can and lose half of your oil?:D I've got 4 of those oil can spouts, including one hi-tech one that has a sponge gasket:eek: to prevent spillage. Big K used to sell the whole set (spout and adjustable oil filter wrench for about a buck!)

    Not me ! never :D

Oh no Boss , those cans are either all defective or the guys on duty before me did that

Huh ? I always open the shop ? well , er uh ....

Oh look ~ I gotta bang out that clutch job before lunchtime , gotta go Boss ! :D

I dunno what I ever did with my old oilcan spouts .

I -DO- have the coolest cast aluminum beer cap remover you ever saw though...

    Super Deluxe

I have a couple of the super deluxe versions of the cardboard can openers. You sit the opener in the hole on the engine, drop in the can and squeez the handle, it pushes the can down opening the can and drains the oil. No mess, no fuss until it CRUSHES the can and it drains down all over the exhaust manifold:eek:

I even have some unopened Texaco Oil cans. Remember when not so long ago there was such a thing:rolleyes:

The good old days are passin us by, just have to enjoy the new waves of the future

We've come a long way baby, I'm just not sure it's in the right direction:(

    Hey Guys

Last year when i got my truck going after i had sat for about 20 years. I oil changed it before i started it, then i hot oil changed it a week after that. I drove i for about 3 months having to put a liter of oil in every tank of gas. After the 3 month i changed the oil befor its last long drive for the winter. When changed it after the 3 month it hardly went through any oil. I would go through about a liter every 3 tanks. Why would that be? I hear if you use synthetic in diffs it leaks out past the seals faster than others. Is that true for the synthetic engine oil?

    hope all is well

    Varying Oil Usage

It prolly seated the rings a bit better with your careful driving and proper maintenance of the engine ~ the same thing always happens to me , I buy some junker and the longer I drive it , the less oil it leaks or burns plus it runs better all the time to due to keeping it in sharp tune and regulalry maintained .

Synthetic oils do seep a little bit more but then these engines never were very oil tight to begine with so unless it begins puking out quarts of black mess on your sdriveway and this seriously impacts your sex life (gratuitous SWMBO comment there) , run synthetic oils if you can afford it .

Remember : if your engine is full of sludge (look in the oil filler hole) the Road Draft Tube may be restricted or plugged and this will cause it to leak and burn more oil , ask a lister here how to fix that easily...

I find improved shifting with fully synthetic gear oil and the drip is about the same IMO .
