Sparky, the 55.1 came equipped with one of those chrome shiny aftermarket things, and I want to replace it with an original. In looking around on the I-net, I have seen two types of oil bath cleaners. One is squatty, maybe 5-6 inches high, and the other is taller, maybe 10 inches high. Whats the deal? Maybe one of them is for the passenger car? I also discovered a paper element type, said to be original to the corvette. ( I guess those guys didnt want any oil drippings during those fast corners.) Any truth to that? Finally, do you think that ATF works better than oil in em? Thanks for all the help once again. Sully
In '55 or so they changed the design of the DeLuxe oil bath typ air filter . both will fit . A nice touch is to find an old Ford one and take the special 1/4" fixing bolt off and use it on your GM air filter ~ GM always used the pan head screw and most folks just yank the air filter off the carby each time , this makes the carby neck wear untill you cannot tighten it up and a loose , wobbly air filter not only is nasty in general , it leaks unfiltered air (!!DIRT!!) into you engine , too .
hmmm... (dumb inexperienced kid question here) you're talking about the bolt that comes up through the center of the air filter and gets tightened at the top with a nut (sometimes a wing nut)?? and you're saying the ford one is just a bit larger in diameter, right? jon
Air Filter No ~ I'm talking about the pinch bolt that squeezes the air filter where it fits on the carby's neck ~ GM used a small short PanHead screw where Ford used a nice long easy to reach bolt with the outer end bent into a triangle so you need NO TOOLS to perform the routine maintenace of air fitler checking and cleaning - just like GM normally would have . Interestingly , GM's airfilters have an embossed tunnel so it's easier to fit the screw driver underneath and into ther screw so the Ford bolt neatly clears and looks factory... The Ford oil bath typ air filters are very well designed and sturdy etc. but Carter designed a flange typ fitting so they won't fit our 1920's tech Rochester carbys... Were I a Tech Head I'd snap some pix with my spiffy camera/phone and post them........ Sorry .
