For anyone building a new bed or re-wooding an old one this tool is very handy, especially for the hard to reach ones. It's to reach up in the bed crossmember channels without having to balance the flat washer, lock washer, and nut on you finger tips. Use a 1 1/8" wood dowel and in one end bore a 7/8" hole about 1/8" deep with a butterfly bit; this accepts a 7/8" OD flat washer. Using the center hole left by the butterfly bit bore a hole deeper till a 1/4" nut and lock washer will just fit down flush in it. A 31/64 bit will let it lightly grip a 1/4" nut but a 1/2" bit will work. On the other end of the dowel I bore a hole that a 3/8 socket will fit tight into it. This lets one use an extension or universal for those tight places. This is just for STARTING the nut, you will have to tighten it with a regular deep socket.

    Evan,

I gotta bookmark all of your tips and tricks like I have with Russ' "how to's." This is great stuff. While I'm quite a ways away from building my bed, I will be revisiting this tip when that time comes. Thanks again for sharing all of your knowledge and experience, it's a huge asset to us DIY'ers!!
