So I fixed the bogging down issue with the new spark plugs I put in.

Now I have focused my attention on the antifreeze on my floorboards.

What makes up the deluxe heater? I found an original heater control valve but I hesitate to shell out the bucks if it won't fix my problem. Is the heating system made up of a heater core and a control valve? What parts could be failing to cause a leak? Is the heater core different from the control valve? If so, where could I purchase a heater core?

It seems as though when I have the heat turned on there is no leaking of antifreeze. When the heater is set to cool air it leaks.. Which leads me to believe it is the control valve.

In summary, I hesitate to start buying parts without knowing how the system works... if it is anything like other systems it is probably simple. Thanks in advance for any information you guys might have on the matter.

    Derek,

Your heater valve is bad and the new ones suck to.I bought 3 new control valves and they all leaked:mad:.So what i did was by pass the valve all together. I took the heater core to the radiator shop and had them put a 90 to go out the fire wall where the valve use to go.Then i put a shut off in the heater hose.So in the summer i shut it off and the winter i turn it on .No more leaks :D because pullin that heater out 3 time in my show truck is enough for me.P.S the core and valve are seperate pieces.

I bought a new old stock one ... will that work better than the ones from the restoration catologs?

P.S. Thanks for the great info.

    Derek,

Cliff is the real experience one these things. That having been said, I did replace/rebuild my entire heater and control valve last fall. I wanted to keep all the original controls working so I went with the replacement parts. I had my heater core rebuilt by a local radiator shop and put it back together with a new valve that I bought from our host, Classic Parts. They are not cheap, part # 68-115, $64.95. I've been using it a lot this winter and it hasn't leaked yet.

If you decide to go that way I would suggest getting your heater core checked out by a radiator shop. If it is leaking they can fix it. I would also recommend that you replace the elbow hose that is inside the heater box. PN 68-711 or 68-712 depending on your truck. If you buy the valve from Classic Parts you'll probably want to go with 68-711 since the valve they sell has the 5/8 tube. You'll probably want to replace the rubber heater bands PN 68-701 while you have the thing apart.

I repainted the box while I had it out and apart so now it's the best looking thing on my truck.
