Auto Trans recommendations

I want to replace my manual transmission with an automatic. I'm not looking to hotrod this truck. I want/need something solid, something that is freeway friendly and comfortable to drive around town. The truck is a '65 C-20 (Camper Special) with the stock 4-speed manual with a stump pullin' first gear. It's also has a heavy duty rear end with a floating axle. I would rather not replace the rear end but will if I have to. I would also like to move the shifter to the steering column (currently it's on the floor).

So I'm looking for recommendations, I'm new at this so the more explanation the better. Would installing a period transmission (Powerglide?) be ideal or would installing a later Turbo 350 or Turbo 400 (what's the difference) be better. Also I've read about folks installing a 700R which I assume is a even newer/better tranny (I know they're at least more expensive).

What are the pro's and con's on each of these transmissions. How about installation, anything to look out for?

I have a lead on a column shift steering column from a '65 that had an automatic. Will the linkage work with a later transmission? If not, is there a later model column that would work with a minimum amount of hassle to install. I'm looking to keep a stock appearance with this truck, so getting an aftermarket column isn't an option.

I know this is alot to ask, but any input would be appreciated.

If it were me.....

I'd look at the 700R4 from a late model TRUCK only. This will give you freeway speeds between 2500 to 3000 RPM. (Your's is probably screaming at freeway speeds like mine is.)

The trans will require a crossmember swap but there are plenty aftermarket suppliers of that. (not sure if our host stock one)

The column is real easy, swap in a late model column shift from truck or van. If you want to move the iginition to the column, then pick that vintage.

I did a column swap when I converted to power steering. I replaced the rag joint with Borgesen U joint and vibration dampner and used a 20 inch double D shaft cut to fit. The column pretty much bolts right up. It took longer to sort out the column wiring than it did to install it, but the whole thing was in in a afternoon.

Because you will need to change the trans support crossmember, a different arrangement needs to be made for the parking brake. My plan calls for a foot operated late model style e-brake, I'm still researching the connection under the truck.

All in all, the 700r4 will give you good performance and excellent highway milage even if you leave the rear ration alone.

I would go with the 700r4, I did.My truck is a 62 3/4 ton. 4x4, Dann 44 front 60 rear with 456 gears, talk about a screaming engine at 55 mph, try 2800 with a 350 turbo,a the old rock crusher transfer case. I rebuilt a 350, purchased a 88 Jimmy and used the 700r4,new process transfer case, used the Jimmy trans. cross member, fit perfect, a
fuse, toggle switch and wire for the lock up converter, now my engine only turns 1800 rpm at 55mph. Alot better on gas!

I would go with the 700r4 if you have the bucks... The TH400 is the next choice and have a mild shift kit installed.... The TH350 will work but the 400 will handle more power.... depending on the gears in the rearend and tire size will have a lot to do with city/highway mileage..... Also do you have any idea what RPM range you motor's power comes on at..... the stall converter is another part of the puzzle...

There is alot to consider depanding on how you look at it... just a street truck... a stock 350CID and TH400/1500 converter with 3.08 gears for the highway or 3.73 gears for the city and 4.10s for the hole shot....if you build up the 350 the TH400 will handle it just fine
