I bought an NOS Carter YF on ePay to put on my truck as per Nate's recommendation. It has an automatic choke on it and needs an insulated heat tube that goes down to and inserts into a cover on the exhaust manifold that is referred to as a "manifold stove". This provides hot air to control the heat activated automatic choke. Anybody know where I can get the sheet metal manifold stove? I have had no luck in my searches for it. Obviously not a truck item as I don't believe these trucks EVER came with an auto choke, but I still have not been able to locate the manifold stove. The heat tube and insulation I am certain I can fab up, but the "stove" may be a bit of a problem unless someone out there has some ideas or knows where to get one. Thanks, Andy
Choke Stove Kit Andy ; NAPA , TOMCO and others all sell a " Universal Choke Stove Kit " , I no longer have the catalogs that list this but it's a pretty common item , even to-day . You know the " HELP " parts section in your FLAPS ? sometimes they'll have the catalog hanging on a hook , take some time and look in there then they can order you up one . The auto choke needs periodic adjustment to function correctly , about four times per year to match the seasons . adjustment is simple : loosen the three screws holding the bakelite cap way loose then hold the throttle about 1/4 open and rotate the cap until the choke butterfly just barely closes , that's it . hold it in place as you gently snug up the screws , you're done . DO NOT use the big slot in the bakelite cover to adjust it ! I know that's obviously why it's there but it WILL shatter . Gotta go now ,# 1 son just arrived for lunch
Found it!!! Dorman sells it. Love those guys. Remember going to your FLAPS about 20-30 years ago and seeing those orange Dorman drawers full of parts you needed and the FLAPS had every single one of them no matter how small or obscure? I miss those days. Got a good guy now (who actually has a whole row of the aforementioned Dorman chests). He is looking for the kit for me. I'll call him tomorrow and tell him that Dorman has it and I will have it by the end of the day guaranteed. The guy is good. Andy
Dorman Products Good deal ! . We still have about 100 of those drawers , sadly we no longer have a Dorman contract supplier so many have been painted over and have brand Z cheapo hardware in them now..... Last year I was lucky and found a pair of old stock , correct ' Just So ' studes for the exhaust manifold on my 235.... I asked all the hardware suppliers for some more but without a sample they were all lost... I neglected to mention CHAMP products , they too have a great supply of little fix-it typ parts and supplies . Lastly , the exhaust manifold is different on automatic choke equipped 235's No big deal when using the universal kit .
How so? I was toying with the idea of putting an automotic choke on mine (I've got 2 new carbys in boxes, one automatic choke). How is the exhaust manifold different?
It has an area for the tube to go into , this collects the heat and there's a vacuum passage inside the carby so it's always drawing a little bit of air up through the tube so when the engine heats up , the warm/hot air passes over the Bi-metallic spring and it relaxes and stops pulling the choke shut . Personally , I don't cotton to auto chokes as they waste lots of fuel and cause early engine wear , you're better using the manual choke and hand throttle to keep the engine running at a fast idle after you get it started...
Proper Auto Choke Usage Oh yeah , I forgot to include this most important part : how to use an automatic choke correctly as few seem to know : Press the accellerator to the floor and hold it there a moment , release _then_ operate the starter without touching the throttle , if your engine is in proper tune and the choke is properly adjusted , it'll *instantly* light off and climb to a high idle , in a few minutes the idle will drop back as the choke opens . Every time I work on some old nail or beat to sh*t low rider , the owners are always amazed when I show then the proper starting drill as most folks incorrectly pump the throttle as the engine is cranking and this gaurantees hard starting ~ when the throttle plate is open , there's insufficient intake vacuum to draw the fuel to the cylinders.... If your old engine needs throttle pumping fine , do it then hit the starter ... Try it , it works . It's like Bones always told Jim : ' I'm a Doctor , not a scriptwriter ! ' - oh wait , that's not it , IIRC he said ' you canna change the Laws of Physics , Jim ! ' ~ yeah , that's it
SNL Memories Nah , Father Sarducci was a different although just as amusing character I have the single he released " What's A Matta You ? " stashed away with my other novelty records.....
Novelty records! Do you have Brother Dave Gardiner or any Spike Jones records? I bust a gut listening to them!
But Of Course ! ....Stacks & stacks of " Laughing Wax "...... Actually , all my Spike Jones music is in CDs.... Didja know ? he created a housing project for musicians ? . it still exists in ..dammit I forget the name of the town , in the S.F.V. TARZANA . -Nate
Installed Carter YF carby, automatic choke stove, water pump, radiator and core support, rebuilt double action glass bowl fuel pump all today. Tonight after I drop off the kids I will install new points and condensor, and time engine better. Perhaps begin the wiring harness. Thursday when I get the kids we'll fire it up again and I am sure it will run very sweet. Will keep you all updated. Andy
