Does anyone know of some way to hook up backup lights. I have a 3 speed on the floor shifter. I would like to have some kind of switch where they would go off automatic. Maybe a pushbutton that would go off by itself?

Evan (Coilover) has installed many backup lights on his project trucks and has some nifty ideas about that. Search the archives and you will find it.

Hella and some other company makes nifty switches you install on the back of the speedometer , when you back up the reverse rotation of the speedo cable switches on the backup lights...

Simple and easy , hidden too .

VW's and other German cars used the Hella (brand) switch , maybe find it on Flea-Bay ?

I'd highly reccomend using driving lights and a relay (the switch won't handle much current draw) , if you also add an underdash switch , they're very useful to discourage tailgaters . if you have a manual switch , be sure to install a tattletale lamp as the ticket for white lights to the rear is a $pendy one  .

I like to mount the lights up under the bed a ways so they're not visable until the come on - keeps the vintage look of the truck intact .

Post up pictures when you're done. I need back up lights and haven't decided where to put them. I like Nates idea.

    Three sped floor shifter ?

This is a top loader tranny or a side loader with a conversion kit ? .

Or do you have a 1947.2 with top loading three speed Saginaw tranny ? .

    I need answers ! .

I used extra lenses and bezels from the front for back up lights on the 50...looked like something that should be there.

I have what I was told a Hollister 3-speed with a hurst floor shift. Its is a neat syncronized aluminun transmission.

I bought a 48" LED bar to go under the tailgate. It has backup lights included signal lights. Here is the link http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/e...m=140227654496&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=004
I don't think this will be seen untill lite. I will still have the originals functional. I was not happy with the original turn signals when the tail lights were lite. I don't know if I will use the strip for the tail lights but am sure I will use the brake light and backup on the strip.

I may try to use a brake light switch on the transmission linkage to control the backup lights. I dont want a toggle switch on the dash but I am not the best mechanic.

I bought the truck on Ebay for my 15-yr old son. I learned to drive on a 53 and if anyone can drive an AD they will be a better driver.

I really appreciate your help. If I am happy with my job I will post pictures.

It's a 3 speed side loadder with a hurst floor shift. I was told it is a Hollister by the guy who sold it. It is aluminum, syncronized and kind of small. I guess I need to look real close because I think I rember GM had some transmissions with a built in switch. Is there a Hollister transmission? I rember paying $80 for a Vega to get the Saginaw 4 speed before I was reincarnated as an old fart.

Back up assembly for chevy cars

This is what was used on passenger cars when back up lights were used. The switch was attached to the gearshift housing on the steering column.

I know this doesn't work for floor shift trucks, but I don't see why it wouldn't work for a 3 on the tree.

You can mount a weather resistant starter button (ask for a boat or tractor) to a bracket that's held by the tailhousing bolt(s). Have it placed where the reverse shifter arm on the trans pushes the button in when in reverse. One wire--from your voltage source through the button and on to the backup lights. Here's one that lets the truck start in park only and is pushed by the shift lever at the bottom of the column.
