Okay, I searched before asking and I didn't find this one. I have a bed bolt set that I bought in '98 and I haven't seen my bed in one piece since about '90. So, I am looking at the number of bolts that would go through the strips into the cross sills and I come up with fewer holes than I have bolts. On some ebay photos where they show under the bed it looks as if there are bolts that just go through the strips and the cracks between the wood but not through the cross sills. So, I am assuming that you do put one through the strips where they line up with the cross sills but my question is, how many more do you put and how are they spaced? Also, the kit came with about 20 bolts that are about 5/16 inch and the rest, about 70 are 17/64 as measured with a drill gauge. Why are there different sizes? Boops Dad, I know you will be putting a bed together when your cuz gets off his duff. Do you have a plan? Thanks, Bill
The 5/16 bolts go along both sides through the angle strips. The 1/4 inch bolts go across the front, rear, and through the two center crossmembers. The end of theses two crossmembers fit under the angle strip and the 5/16 bolt holds them to the angle strip on the side (the bed board has to be in place when bolting to angle strip). The remaining 1/4 bolts go through the steel bed strips halfway between the crossmembers and have a large washer that just fits up against wood. The best way to see how the boards go is to measure the space between the holes in the rear crossmember and match that to the board widths.
Thanks Evan, That sounds good. I may have to buy a few more bolts since, even though I bought the kit for the long bed, there are still not enough to do it that way for a 9 foot bed like mine. One more thing, are there holes for bolts in the bottom lip of the head piece or to the bed boards "float" on the lip in front? Thanks again, Bill
