Working through my punchlist this morning and ordering some parts. Bed Mounting. Is there any reason why the bed has to be mounted on wood blocks? I was thinking about mounting the bed on steel tubing welded to the chassis. I was going to drill and tap the tubing to make installation easier. Any input?
Mine is box tubing. The wood probably absorbs some vibrations, but I don't know that it matters that much. The 53 was with wood blocks.
If you do use steel I would recommend putting something between the bed and the steel tube to prevent squeaking. I have used plastic for this, from one gallon water jugs.
We never use wood blocks but instead have made up square steel tubes the same size with plates on the ends and a square of truck mud flap bonded to one end. Mud flap is darn sure designed for any road/weather condition and a squeak preventer.
I used hard rubber jeep body mount bumpers on my '48 bed. Same heigh and already had the wole in the middle. A friend of mine was putting a lift kit on his jeep and gave me his old ones. Good luck!
Here's a discussion we had earlier about mounting blocks. https://talk.classicparts.com/showthread.php?t=11851&highlight=blocks Ken
