Bed wood for 1965 long fleetside

Also, I think these trucks came with the bed wood painted black. Is that correct ?? Since I'm going to use it as a light truck, carrying motorcycles and such, is painting the wood still a good option or should it be stained and sealed with something ?? Any ideas ?? Thanks

Since my job is to think outside of the box there are times I cannot even tell if the box is in the same state as I am. So here goes - Has anyone who needs a utility bed, not show, tried using the "Plastic 5/4" deck material and routing out the groves. This stuff lasts virtually forever. Is designed for direct sunlight and I have seen it in Brown and Gray and would be cheeper than pine. Another idea is to use pressure treated 5/4" deck wood and after it is reasonable dry paint it Black.

I have the deck material in my truck
I am installed the poly deck 5/4 material in my truck bed. I have a '62 short step. If you are not making a show truck it works great. I get a lot of comments about it. I used a product called Trex. There are a few colors available. It is NOT cheap. If I recall I had about $140 in material. You don't have any finishing expense. The big problem is the material does not come as wide as the original wood. To solve this I bought another metal bed strip. I redrilled all of my mounting crossmembers. I spaced the wood where it looked right. Not all of my boards are the same width, just like the factory did it. The material cut and routed as good as if not better than real wood. I wondered about staining from oil in the bed, but there doesn't seem to be a problem. My fuel tank is relocated to the rear of the truck. My filler is in the center board of the bed. Here is the kicker - My truck is diesel, which is just thin oil. I constantly spill a little on the Trex when I fill. It lets a mark for a little while but it does seem to disapear in a day or so. For my truck it was just right. I'm happy with it.

Since I am new to the chevy truck stuff I was wondering about the width but it seems you also have trouble finding the box.
It sound like a great solution for those that want usable beds with little to no maintainance. Even with the purchase of the extra rail it sounds cheeper than pre-fabbed pine.
