I upgraded my 1950 chevy 1/2tn brakes with CPP dual master/booster with front disc kit(rear are still orginal drum) a couple years back and am just getting around testing everything. the problem i am having is when i have the engine running to provide the vacuum, when i press the brake pedal it doesnt return or just a tiny bit. if I have the engine off and cycle the brakes the pedal returns right away.

The is plenty of fluid, lines have been bleed, sufficent vacuum. I will check soon if there is braking force still applied when the pedal doesnt come back up, because the heat my clothes had reach maximum sweat absorption so i could not stay out any longer.

Do you have the pedal return spring hooked up?

I installed the same system on my 57 and it is very important to have the return spring hooked up . I put gauges on the calipers and found that without the spring the front calipers had 5 psi .(that was the average. +or- a pound or two) with the spring on the caliper read zero.
    good luck

all day i had hoped when i got home and looked under the truck that i would see a spring hooked up so that i would not feel stupid for overlooking the simple. BUT there was no spring so i fail. thanks for the knock on the head.It is always the simplest answer.

so now the second part of my brake woes. the parking/emergency brake. anyone have a good diagram of how the cable connects into the rear brakes. the factory assembly (as far i can find) doesnt have a picture of the brake pad assembly at all and the service manual shows a picture of the front brakes and gives directions how to disassembly the rear brakes to change the pads but i dont know what the pieces they are describing. for refresher reference it is a 1950 1/2ton. 51 and up have a different setup.

pic #1 shows where i had to reposition the pully.#2 looking down the frame railshowing the brake cable clearing the steering gear bracket. #3 looking from the back of the truck showing cable going through pully and clearing the master cyl.
    I hope these help.

after more ...and more searching the internet and trying different words i think i found out my problem on for the parking brake cable connection in the rear brakes is i am missing parts. I have not found any diagram of the rear yet just the front but on a different thread on here i found pictures and can see something hiding where i would suspect a linkage to be to cause the pads to expand.
thank you for the photos but luckily i dont have any routing issues for the parking brake control rod(i believe).
this was definately a work/farm truck in its former life. I just didnt realize how badly until i was elbow deep into it, what its true condition was. But i will I will chalk it up to being an excited young adult who just want an AD Chevy to drive (the forth of five chevy trucks i've owned)and wanted to wrench on it myself to running condition. So i didnt look it over as nearly as much as should have. sorry to ramble off there.

I don't know if these will help. This is the assembly where it goes from 1 cable to two that activates the rear drums.
    Good luck

Don't get discouraged, these trucks are as simple a machine as you will find, but some old world tech doesn't seem quite right in modern mechanics. Look in the repair book and the assembly manual to find the answers you seek, grasshopper.
