I need some help in learning the ins and out of the carburator. All my out stuff is going to crap because I can not ajust them or really know anything of the carburator.
I am running a Holly 600 so I can't help you. The place to ask your question is over at www.stovebolt.com. Those guys really know their carbs.
Which Carby Is It ? The venerable Rochester Series "B" is a very good , simple carby (simple ? it's bloody CRUE !) , once you've cleaned it and added a see through plastic fuel filter , you'll not need to touch it again for years ~ carbys DO NOT GO OUT OF ADJUSTMENT ! . How may I assist you Charles ? .
Hold yer horses! If you spend some time getting familiar with who's who, you'll know that Nate IS Mr. "carb"! No need to go to stovebolt~
Nate, My truck has the carter carb on it, I need a lesson in these contraptions. When I take off and get to about half a thoddle it starts cutting out like it is choking for gas, more like a dirty filter. But the filters are new, the engine is just been rebuilt. It will leak gas out of it after I stop the engine, it floods real simple, going up a grade is almost impossible. Right now the truck will be gone for a week. Thanks,
A Carter YF then ? it's prolly the metering rod that's causing the 1/2 throttle choking , it needs to be loosened up and gently pressed home whilst your third hand is holding the throttle closed . Flooding is endemic to oldies , I know you hate to modify the steel fuel lines but the fuel filter MUST be mounted to the carby inlet , then you can re-bend the steel line to suit , I just cut mine short .
Sadly , I do not have pix but if you can find a rebuilt kit say from TOMCO etc. , it should have a detailed instruction sheet explaining the various adjustments you make before it's on the engine ~ I'll have a looksee but I don't think i haveany reference books for Carter carbys .
Charles, the 48-51 truck shop manual has a lot of info and pictures of Carter carbs. If you don't have a copy of the shop manual, here's a link to an online copy. http://chevy.oldcarmanualproject.com/shop/1948_51truck/index.htm Go to section 6-49 (fuel system) for info on the carter carbs.
