Carburator/Choke Problems

    I have a 64 Chevy with a 305 V8 engine. It was taken out of a 77 El Camino. It has a stock 2 barrel rochester carb with auto choke. Since the cold weather started, it has been running really crappy. It seems the choke is fully engaged at all times, and will not adjust. As a result, I could not accelerate, and was stalling. I'm weak in this area, so I would appreciate any advice. Could someone tell me how to tune the carb, as well? Also, when I turn it off, it seems to sputter a couple times before finally cuttting out. ???

    It seems like you have a bad carb or the carb that you have is too small for your engine. What size carb do you have, and has it been rebuilt lately or serviced? There are also other options like switching to electric choke.

    Was anything done just prior to it running "crappy"? If the engine will idle, let it warm up then hold open the choke blade and slowly work the accelerator (keep your face away from carb as it may backfire). Does engine run smooth or stumble? If it runs smooth then it's your choke. Not knowing what type of choke it is, check for bent linkage, broken spring, etc...

    With choke open and it doesn't run smooth up thru the RPMs, check your fuel filter. If you've had the carb apart check the float level and that everything is clean. Also check that the plug wires are seated and on the correct locations at the distributor and plugs.

    As for the "when I turn it off, it seems to sputter a couple times before finally cuttting out." Check your timing, the "dieseling" can be caused by too much "advance".
