O.K. , this again : If you don't want to overhaul your old smoky & tired 235 , just to begin hitting up all the Task Force forums & web sites you can find , read older posts about Hor Rod building as they take the nice 235 out and plop in a SBC and then never manage to sell the old engine , even if it was recently rebuilt ~ A good used 235 engine should not cost over $200 , fan to clutch , 100 % complete and ready to run . The few people who've taken my advice here , have gotten wonderful engines for cheap or FREE as after it sits in the back of the garage , out in the back yard under a tarp for a few years , the $$ signs in the sellers eyes fade a bit and reality sets in so when you reply to a 5 year old message and the " Cast Iron Wonder " is still available , you're in The Catbird Seat price wise.... Be nice please , but be realistic and don't go spending $1,000 on a takeout . The venerable 235 Stovebolt engine was used in everything Chevy made from 1956 through 1962 so they're out there , heavy & unwieldy , a PIA to get rid of unless you're a shop ~ even the junkyards cannot sell the cylinder heads anymore .
I just can't believe that anyone would remove an Inliner and replace it with one of those V-thingies. Oh well, I guess it is good for those of us who are looking for good 235's...
True That!!! I did EXACTLY what Nate just said and I got my 235 for FREE from radiator fan to trans tailshaft. I had to drive 5 hrs. to pick it up, but free is FREE!!!! The nicest guy in the world just gave the engine to me and helped me load it into my suburban. Got it home, put a new carby and fuel pump on it and it started right up and has been running great ever since. The previous owner pulled it in favor of a SBC and the old 235 sat in his garage for a couple of years. guess he got tired of it always being in the way. Andy
Ditto Craig's list and $100 got me mine including the 4 speed tranny. Runs fine, no smoke. All it needed was an exhaust manifold and fuel pump. There's usually one on the list here every other month or so...Thanx Nate.
