i havent posted in awhile so please dont hold that acenst I found a 66 chevy cab a buddy of mine has that is in way better shape as far as rust then mine is/was when I pur my 64 Gmc together. Mine had a big hole above the windshield I patched in with other pieces of metal when I did the rust repair. And ofcorse rocker inner and outers. And big holes in the floor. Now he has a damn good floor only hole I seen 3 holes in a area about the size of my hand. The rockers are good but dented' and, there is nothing else wrong with the 66 chevy cab just a few small dents. Now the engine caught fire and burnt the wires and melted the dash cluster and other plastics on the dash. The truck also has rust free inner wheel wells. Now I can get the cab and anything else I want off of it for under $300. So I guess my question is what if any other then the dash and the hump in the floor ( mine has the high hump his has the low hump but look pretty flat to me) would be differant? Are the holes for the heater the same? Both have the deluxe heaters. My thoughts are to take that chevy cab and remove the dash and put my gmc dash in it and put it on my frame and have a good clean cab with little to no patches and no filler above the windshield. And while I'm at it I think I'm going to go ahead and paint the truck instead of runing in primer like I have for the last few years. Any thoughts or what you would do would help thanks guys.
Cab Swap Sounds like a good plan to me ! . The floor hump is important depending on what tranny you're using . I did this decades ago on my '46 , in the long run it saved me serious time and $ . I'm now looking for another cab for my '69 C/10 , it's all rusted to junk .
Cab Fun I'm in So. Cal. , land of mindless crushing of anything , not much left out here in the yards . I'd grab that whole truck for $300 and strip it silly , lots of small parts you can re sell to recoup some of the $ . That looks to be a 292 I6 , I'd like that if only for rebuilding . Keep taking those pictures and posting ~ this is a very good " how to proceed " thread IMO .
Do the cab swap....to save the windshield area and top of cab, beg, borrow, steal a small sandblaster, cleanout the upper gutter area top of cab of all old sealant, rust, all the way around, primer it and use evercoat seam sealer...self leveling...... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8FcE3FF3q_w
That's the plan. I just brought this back to the top to show what parts I have for sale in my gmc grille tread.
Roof Swap ? Is this really do - able ? I'm a Mechanic but have no body work chops and my cab is lace everywhere *but* the roof ~ recently I found a near perfect cab but the rain gutter was all rusted out over one door , I wasn't sure if it's possible much less a good idea to cut off the roof and re weld it onto a different cab that's otherwise rust free.....
Oh yeah it can be done. Just takes some time. all im doing is takeing this cab and putting it on my frame and removing the dash and putting mine in. i already removed the chevy dash. 3 bolt on both sides and 30 spot welds after removing the windshield.
