My '85 (305 carb'd) has the "Oil Pressure/Choke" light on when I start and run the engine. The motor hums like a sewing machine, but the throttle response IS a little sluggish. My problem is there is only the light; I have no gauges to monitor pressure. Is there a way I can verify oil pressure without making a huge mess? If it's an oil pump, I obviously want to know. If it's the carb keeping the light on, then I can isolate and fix that problem easier. Thanks!
If the throttle is a little sluggish that sounds like it might be the choke, but to make sure its not the oil pressure, wait till your next oil change and change the oil pressure switch. The electric guage in my truck used to max at 30 but usually stayed at 0 psi. I replaced the switch and now it reads between 45 and 60 psi. You could also try to rig up a mechanical oil pressure guage in your engine compartment in case the light stays on and you want to make sure the pressure is still good. Good luck, Craig
