What are you using for the cigarette lighter? I don't smoke just want an outlet for power to charge my phone so I want to find something out of Aluminum or chrome to go in the stock cigarette lighter hole. Thanks
I use my cigarette lighter socket with my phone charger and occasionally my GPS. Neither pulls more than 1 amp. So when I rewired my under-dash I connected the lighter socket and the keep-alive circuit on my radio to a single 5 amp fuse. But I was afraid that someone would push in the lighter (which pulls more than 5 amps) and pop the fuse, so I grabbed the heating element in the lighter with a pair of pliers and ripped it out. Now I don't worry.
Swap meet for a kool one. Last I heard there were something like 53 different patents on lighters. funny huh?
Mine's a repop from our host. http://www.classicparts.com/1947-53-Cigarette-Lighter-Assembly-12v/productinfo/36-508/#.U3rRlE3jiUk
I put a power outlet in it has a flexible plastic cover that never stays in. I use the outlet to charge the phones and for the power inverter to use a drill with. The link below talks about use of the old lighter and use. http://www.overlandexpo.com/overland-tech-travel/2012/6/15/ditch-the-cigarette-lighter.html
In the good ol' days, all cars and trucks had cigarette lighters and ashtrays but, no cup holders. Now they all have fifteen cupholders and no ashtrays, and the lighters are called "power outlets". Rather than having "power outlets", they need to install cell-phone signal BLOCKERS in cars. I really wish people would put down the phones, close up the laptops, and put away the tablets and DRIVE!!!
Power Outlet THANX for the link Charles ! I read the ' Bodge Fixes ' article with great interest . FWIW , there is a difference in size between the American and Metric cigarette lighter outlets ~ I discovered this when I tried putting a new repop cigarette lighter into my old GM lighter receptacle . In general , I use GM upper bracket (Caddy,Buick,Olds Etc.) illuminated lighter receptacles , they're sturdy and well made , all metal and usually illuminated to boot , unused (means un rusted) good ones are in the back seats of many junked cars , you only need to look . I now have a Garmin and a small electric fan I like to run when I'm out on the Open Road so the outlet I use , is important , I don't like having to constantly reach over and push the plug back in . Those DIN plugs are nice but then you have to change the male plug of all your portable electric devices .
