Hey gang, Now I am taking the clutch out of my 52 3/4 ton -- and the disk and pressure plate are 10 3/4 inches. Called Classic Parts and their manufacturer/rebuilder doesn't do that size anymore. Any suggestions on what to do or where to go? Help!!! (and thanks!) Eric
Go to your FLAPS (friendly local auto parts store, not a chain store like Pep Boys). Find out who they use to rebuild clutches but DO NOT (repeat DO NOT) give them your parts. Bring them to the rebuilder yourself. You should be pleasantly surprised. Or you can call a number of other vendors for these old trucks to find out if they have your parts. Too bad CP doesn't have what you need. We ALL like to use them because they are just so darned good and they host this wonderful forum. I have had very good luck with Bowtie Bits for parts that CP does not carry, especially odd ball stuff. Worst case scenario if you simply cannot find the clutch to replace your size would be to use a different size clutch, but that may mean swapping out the flywheel. You'll have to wait for Nate to chime in on that one. Remember, there are several different sizes of clutches as well as different flywheels (teeth pattern) known as 6 volt and 12 volt flywheels. You never know what a DPO (dead or dumb previous owner) did to your truck, so you must be certain of the number of teeth on the flywheel, etc. I was going to go with the larger flywheel and clutch that I had until I realized this. I almost put a 6 volt flywheel and clutch in when I was going to use a 12 volt starter. THAT would have been bad...very bad. Andy
Clutch Availability Last time I asked , NAPA still had access to brandy NEW clutches for these trucks ~ as mentioned , DO NOT hand over your old clutch to anyone but the rebuilder directly , a parts house should be able to order one up for you and charge you a small " core charge " untill the job is done and working to your satisfaction then and ONLY then , you can turn in your old clutch disc and cover . I don't know where you live Eric , if in So. Cal. I can hook you up wth a good rebuilder in No. Hollywood . Pics of the old clutch would be good as thata way I can tell you if you have a Rockford or Diaphram typ clutch cover , it helps to know when you're calling around . Remember too : the shape of the fingers on the clutch cover will dictate what the face of the throw out bearing should be , this is often overlooked and leads to early clutch failure from fitting the wrong T.O. bearing ...
