Column shift troubles..

Hey folks,
I'm sure some of you have had the same troubles, If I don't hit it just right when shifting, it locks up, then I have to stop and line the linkage up manually and start all over. Anyone ever fix this problem other than putting in a floor shifter...Thanks

I'll assume you are talking about a three speed column shift. ( But this is kinda true for automatics too.)

Start by replacing all the grommets on the shift linkage with NEW ones of the correct part number. Do them one at a time so you don't completly disassemble the shifting linkage.
Replace all cotter pins with NEW ones of correct size.

While doing this , inspect all piviot points, like z-bar, for sloppiness. Find the cause and fix it.

The bible for working on these trucks, or any older vehicle is the Factory Shop Manual. Get one ! It will provide all the information you need to properly adjust the shift linkage.

I had a newer truck that had a column shift and found that the shop manual method for aligning the linkage made the thing shift like a dream. I suggest replacing the bushings and aligning the linkage.

Good move ! You won't regret it. One thing. Depending on the year of your truck, you may need a supplement. If you have a 63 you are in luck. If it's a 64 or 65 you will need the 63 manual AND the supplement for the year. I think it is the same for the 60 with supplements for the 61 and 62.
