Creating trailer brakes

I need some advice on installing working brakes on a pickup bed that has been turned into a trailer. It has the original 58 Chevy 6 lug axle and hydraulic lines. Does anyone know if I can use the existing brakes or will I have to convert it to more modern drums or electric brakes?
