Ive heard that you can take spindels from a 73-87 chevrolet truck. is this true? if so are they bolt on replacements? i already did the power steering power brake conversion. wanting to atleast upgrade my front brakes to disc brakes. let me know
YES, you can... But you will also need to swap tie rod ends, pitman arm, and ball joints. Most just grab the entire front crossmember and bolt that up after drilling some new holes and mounting a new idler arm. BUT, in my humble opinion you will get more bang for the buck by budgeting for a quality disk brake conversion kit. Check Early Classic Ent at http://www.earlyclassic.com After piecing together a conversion from yard parts you will still be left with many components that will need to be rebuilt. At best you will only save a few hundred dollars, and still have a very old front suspension. The EC kit will go in in one day. dv
This is how I updated my front end on my 66 Mine was a FREE donor 75 half ton. I pulled the whole front cross over and grafted up the 75 to the frame. I had to redrill 2 new holes in the frame. and worked great. But with that said i did refresh ball joint tie rod ends,New rotor, rebuilt calipers and all the normal wear items. I lower it with drop coil spring from our host here. I belived I saved a little in parts . but a lot more labor involed so i guess its your descsion on witch direction to go. Kilroy steps off soapbox!!!
Check the catalog on the different kits with the torsion bar front suspension. Personally the kits are worth it. Factor in gas money and time. You will come out way ahead. I pieced the kit together on my own and it does save me anything. The kit saves me time and cash. Also look at the over all safety of the truck.
That torsion suspension should be a very well handling front end with good parts and shocks. Drop front with a 2 1/2 drop spindle. Add the RIGHT shocks and maybe a sway bar. Compliment the rear with the a same drop and a rear sway. You would be amazed how well that truck will handle. I am keeping my front torsion. Dropping the spindles and doing the same with the rear. And staying with the 6 lug. For right now the drums work great. The little extra cash needed to stay with 6 lug....eh no biggie. Just have to drink a little less beer for the next couple months.
I see a lot of good ideas in this old truck slave cylinder torsion rod suspension three on the tree x out frame I could probably box in the front frame horns and plow . The brakes are simple however this 235 seems to be made like a puzzle example#1 my 235 has a mount under the balancer the engine I have a 235 from a 62 Biscayne utilized a side mount on either side to change the plate behind the balancer so I can bolt this engine in the cam must be removed rockers push rods lifters side cover and I wonder should i go ahead and pull the head and service it 46800 miles granny car motor surely the cars and trucks are the same displacement .#2 ever tried pulling the bell housing the pressure plate clutch flywheel then you can get to the hidden bolts. Have a sand blaster I will paint it all .By the way if you remove the flywheel put the bolts back in or you WILL spill oil .
