Door hinge rebuild...

I recently attempted to install a door hinge rebuild kit on my 64'. When I attempted to put the door back on, I had a hell of a time adjusting it. Can anyone give me some pointers? The door keeps rubbing against the fender & cowl ext.

PS: Anyone have any window regulators in working cond' they would like to sell??

arizona, good luck on the doors. I know it's realy frustrating. took me hours to get mine adjusted so they didn't rub. just keep trying. about the regulators. I have both the right and left ones. the plastic roller wheels are gone on both of them, but I think chevy Duty has wheels you can put back on. One of the regulator springs is gone, so I don't know if the window will stay up when rolled up. I ended up puting on new ones, about 46 bucks apiece.(ugh!) Anyway, if you pay for the shipping, you are welcome to both the regulators, for free. I don't imagine shipping would be too much, but you might end up wanting just to buy new regs.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON Feb-28-02 AT 02:49 AM (CST)]Well if you refuse to duct tape the door on and crawl through the window with the bad regulator, You might try taking off the filler panel in front of the windshield and above the fender.Open the door and put a floor jack (one with wheels)under the rear corner of the door for support. Loosen both hinges then take your best shot at locating the bottom door hinge to where you think it should be. Tighten it down, and only snug tighten the top hinge to the point where you can force the top hinge to move, but it will hold itself with very lttle assistance from you holding the door handle. Test close the door slowly and check the distance between the fender and the door. It should be obvious which way you need to move the lower hinge after that. It may turn out that the door latch is out of adjustment from being re-adjusted to work with the bad hinge. If you get the bottom hinge in the correct position it will be simple to get the top one dead on and then tighten it on down. You may have to play musical chairs with the jack, but it will be like having an extra hand. Plus it will help to keep from bending the lower hinge. I don't know if this will help, but its how I used to do it and it worked like a charm.

one other tip for the future, it can help to drill two holes diagonally through the hinges before you take them off, that way you can use pins to help line them up during reassembly. It at least gets you back in the ball park. No matter what you do, you will have to adjust and adjust and adjust. the floor jack trick can help you from making a bad mistake if you are working alone. Its also not a bad idea to tape off the fender, door and cowl edges with making tape. It may keep you from knocking the paint off the edges when fitting.
