Ok on this 3600 it has a two piece shaft with an oil lubricated carrier bearing..
I am wanting to avoid that issue since installing the automatic tranny.. We have a driveshaft out of an old car 70s something.. It lacks about 5 inches of being long enough. I am thinking of taking it to a driveshaft shop and having them lengthen one end to make it fit..
Can anyone see why this would not work? Both ends are correct for the application. Just too short. They can lengthen and re-balance at the shop. Thanks

My experience has been that a driveshaft shop can easily shorten a shaft but will probably want to use a new tube and your old ends if it needs to be longer.Check with the shop to make sure you measure the way they want it measured.

I am running a one piece shaft behind a 2004r auto in a 51 3600 and have had no problems. It needs to be perfectly balanced and a large enough diameter because it will slightly exceed the recommended length for a one piece shaft.

I have always run a 1 piece shaft in mine and no problems. Get a driveline shop to do what they do. Take them the shaft and the measurements (leaving a little room for the slip in the rear of the trans) and tell them to make it work.
