Sorry, I was in a hurry Here's what my holdup is. I wired the back end back up and found I needed to get better grounding to the back lights. That worked great. I now have nice, bright running lights all the way around. I also have turn signals and brake lights, (although that spring I ordered for the brake pedal isn't as strong as it should be.) When I pull the headlight switch the rest of the way out, the only thing that happens is it appears that the running lights get ever so slightly brighter. I quickly checked to see if anything has going on with the brand new 12 volt halogen lights, and all I have is a very, very slight glow. It seems like a ground problem, but why would the parking lights/turn signals work so well going through the same switch and terminal destinations up front? BTW, I've mentioned before, I don't know beans about wiring. Thanks for any assistance!
Use a volt meter to test the voltage at the terminal strip with the headlights on. If 12+ volts problem is towards the light. If low voltage problem is towards the switch.
Keep in mind that one of the wires going to the sealed beam is a ground wire. If you grounded your headlights and parking lite to the fender you may need to ground the fender to the chassis. I brought my ground wires back to the terminal strip on inner fender and crossed over to other inner fender then grounded to both points. Hope this helps. Ask more if it doesn't. ;o)
Right~ Time to find a youtube video that shows how to use one of these. Yes, I am that ignorant when it comes to car wiring. (And this tool that I am to use...)
Some pictures, of course Here's how it hooks up under the hood. I really admire those who know what they are doing electronically that can hide all this stuff. Someday, right? Anyway, the one with a bunch of wires is the driver side. Two of the black wires are from the parking/turn signal light on that side. On the passenger, the orange and red wires coming up to the bottom are the park/turn signal light wires. (In order to hook them up, I needed to splice some to the length of what came with these lights. I didn't have any black wire, so...) Anyway, if you see something else that I can check whilst I drum up a youtube video on voltage meters, holler! Thanks for the replies as always!
Call me when you are ready to work on it and I'll talk you through how to use the meter and we'll troubleshoot together. Check your PMs for a phone number.
THANKS, Bill! I'm waiting on a phone call right now, so it will be a while yet, but I'll do it! I feel like maybe I should make a video of this phone conversation~ HA!!!
originally the park light will turn off when the headlights turn on. unless you modify the switch this diagram is from stovebolt.com it sounds like you have a bad ground on your headlamps your picture didn't show the ground wire? check that your ground wire has good contact.
Bill Hanlon~ Above and beyond!!! I can't tell you all how great it is to have a member here say, "call me and I'll walk you through it"~ and have it turn out just that way! Bill went above and beyond the call of duty, because when you have someone say they are a nincompoop at wiring and he say's, "I'll walk you through it"... Well, it just doesn't get any better than that! And he did! I now have all lights working and no fear of my truck burning down! (like I told Bill that's what happened after I promised I would try and finish off the passenger side follow what was already established.) (Yes, I'm that way!) Anyway, I am including a picture of the driver's side wiring that I taped and labeled according to what Bill said I should. Bill~ I am so thankful that you took this challenge on and spent the time you did to help me out. You are a true friend, and I thank you!
Tubby, thank you TOO for the diagram help! You are just like Bill~ Always ready to help a fellow trucker! Thank you!
Wiring Woes Glad to hear you got it going Paul ; For me , wiring and electrical works are fun if time consuming . Making it look pretty isn't my forte' but I'm insistent on everything working correctly and nice and bright too .
