Emergency Brake Handle Connection

I have a 66 Stepside which was purchased without an emergency brake handle. I purchased one from a junk yard and installed it, but can't figure out where the large spring (which was still attached to the firewall inside the cab when I purchased the truck) connects to. There is no hole in the handle and without the spring connected, the handle doesn't function correctly. Any ideas? thanks for all your help.

The return spring for the e-brake is located UNDER the truck, not in the cab. It stretches from the fulcrum affair, that holds the two cables that connect to each rear drum, to the crossmember that the driveshaft passes through.
