I'm running a fairly stock 250 in my '63 c-20, with the original granny low 4 speed. With the 5.13 rearend I have plently of power at low speeds. I am using the truck to pull a 25 gooseneck trailer with two antique tractors on it. The trailer and tractors weighs around 10,000. I am asking too much of my little 250? I was driving about 60 mph on the expressway yesterday, (no trailer, just empty truck) and I shelled the Cam Shaft gear. It's been about 4 years and 50,000 miles since I overhauled the motor, and used the same camshaft and gear. Would I be better off finding a small block? Was the cam gear failure related to my excessive towing use? Anybody else out there working one of these 6 cylinders hard? Anyone else out there shelled the cam shaft gear and why? I am considering dropping a bone stock 350 in. I don't think it would be too hard. Just use CD's tubular motor mount and everything should bolt right up.
