Here is probably another stupid question. How do you tell a 250 6 cyl from a 292 without an engine #? I saw a 66 up for bid on ebay that claimed to have a 292 engine but the picture posted looks just like a 250.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON Mar-04-03 AT 12:04 PM (CST)]In the 63 Service manual pictures of the motors three things jump out.

The 292 fuel pump is mounted closer to the center of the block with the 230 six Fuel pump mounted closer to the front.

The oil filter on the 292 is mounted vertically (UP n Down) and the 230 is mounted at an angle.

And lastly, the lifter covers on the right side of the block are larger, more square, on the 292. The covers on the 230 are rectangular.

    Hope this helps.

Another good way to tell is that the engine mouning brackets arethe same on each side (but mirrored) on the 230 and 250 engines, like the 283 V8. The 292 cid engine has different shaped engine mounting brackets on each side.
