1955 235 CI engine (overhauled in 2010) Single exhaust Pertronix ignition I am not giving up on you guys but i am shore someone can give me some information here! As i have bought the Fenton dual intake for the 235 engine wich has carb studs holes measured on senter 2-15/16 there must be a 1 barrel caburetor model and brand you guys can recommend to use here? I am intrested to make a direct fit install. What are your experiences and recommendations? Should i use a Rochester, Stromberg,Carter,Zenith ? Martinius.
Of the carbs you listed I have had the best luck out of the Carter but I don't know what the mounting stud centerline is. Have a couple in the storage shed I can measure and will do so. I'm sure you know that only one needs a choke and the ones with the automatic chokes are easier to find a matching pair. Several venders offer stove pipe kits to get heat to the choke spring housing or some will accept the electric choke with a little modification. I have made adaptors to give a different stud spacing but since the carb has to be rotated enough to give room for the new studs to clear the countersunk bolts in the old studs position then the accelerator linkage might not work. I used an accelerator cable so this wasn't a problem. The reason this was done is because I found a very nice set of matching carbs but with different stud spacing. The Rochesters have a history of leaking and are prone to throttle shaft wear. I have not used the Zenith and don't know if the Stromberg is offered in the correct size. A 235 only requires 275cfm of air at 4000rpm so it it easy to go too big. I have used the Holley one barrels like offered on the 170/200 Ford six. They seem to be a decent carb but are so short and squat they win an ugly award.
Carb issue ? Thanks Evan This help to clearout the onces i should`nt use and give me some moore carb alternatives to think about to get anough power and performance with the dual setup. There are many people whom do not give the Rochesters any positiv credit. But the Carter YF and WA are well made and easy to get hold on. Rep. kits are also very easy to get. Did you go for the Fenton dual exhaust system aswell ? CarbsOnly sells the model Zenith 228 1 bbl. wich they recommend for the Fenton intake, they sell the Zenith carb 1 bbl with an el.choke aswell but i have no references to this solution? 275 CFM flow at 4000 rpm is a factor i was`nt aware of so this good to know when making a choice before buying the 2 carbs i need. Thanks again and have a nice weekend, Martinius.
I used the 54 Corvette 235 dual exhaust. Almost extinct now. If you get stuck on some problem let me know and I will put you in contact with an expert on multi carb intakes for six cylinder engines. First picture is an overall view of his swap meet display and second pic shows two tables of 235 intakes. He has many times more than this at home.
Carbs needed ! Thanks Evan Wow this salesman has a lot of good intakes on the table( wonderland ) I am going for the Fenton dual intake solution , ordered it from Patricks yesterday. I need a cople of good remanufactured carbs with the 2-15/16 senterline distance. Could you be kind to send me a pm. with the adres and phonenumber of the expert ? Maybe he has some good carbs he wants to sell me ? Aprecate that Martinius.
Geeze~ That's a bunch of intakes! Evan, do you know if there are any that fit a 228? I guess the 228 is such a great engine, they don't have these available like they do for the Chevy blocks. Even our host doesn't carry any. I know patrick has one and Big Tim has given me instructions on how to make one that would fit, (which would be w-a-y cool to do...) but I'd like to know if he has a set up for a 228, and I bet other GMC owners might be thinking the same thing. (Along with header solutions if you go the dual carby route.) TIA, Evan!
Here is his name and number. Dave Aos, Cedar Hill, TX. 972-291-4391 email 29MDLA@tx.rr.com I have never bought anything from him but he is very pleasant to talk to.
Zig, I would be interested in what he has to say as another GMC owner with a 228, looking at the intake dilema... 4barrel, single , double, tripple? Thanks
