Finding axel ratio

I have a 72 short bed 6 cylinder manual 3 speed that I am converting to a 350/TH350 automatic. My problem is determining the axel ratio that I currently have. I have been told that all I have to do is raise the wheels off the ground and turn the drive shaft x amount of times until the wheel has made one complete revolution. Trouble is that when I do that the drive shaft only has to turn about 1.8 times to get the wheel to make one complete revolution. I'm sure I don't have 1:80 gears so I'm wondering what I am doing wrong.
Any help would be appreciated.

The only way to know for sure what ratio you have is to pull the rear cover. On the ring gear are a series of #'s. You're looking for the ones in the middle of the group, they will be one or two digits then a space and then two more. Examples; 10 41, 11 41, 9 41, 14 43,...etc. To find your ratio divide the first # into the second. 11 and 41 is 3.73, 10 and 41 is 4.10 and so on. Yes, there are #'s stamped on the housing, but you don't know if the gears are original or not. Like I said the only way is to count the teeth yourself and divide the pinion into the ring, or use the #'s on the ring gear.

I was trying to avoid having to pull the cover but i will probably have to. I did find some numbers on the right axel housing facing towards the front but i can't find my notes right now. I am almost certain the gears are original because the truck only has 43,000 original miles on it. If I told you the numbers would you be able to tell me what they mean?

if you post the numbers i will try to decipher them the best that i can
 
that code did not com back try looking on the bottom sid e of the left or right axel tube to find the numbers. it say that the first three are letters that tell you the ratio and then four numbers to tell the build date and the last letter to tell where it was built.and it looks like it will start with a R

I looked everywhere on that axel and here is what I found. On the front side of the differential housing are large letters "GM60". On the upper left back side of the housing I found the letters "CON" and under that 12345

Charles F Rising JR: is there a tag that is bolted to the rearend cover? if so than this will have the ratio on it as well if not the time to do the nasty and pull the cove. Besides it might be a great time to replace the old gear lube .:)

numbers on rear end on right side tube

THA W177 2 please let me know if you come up with anything i list of rear codes but this one is not on there
