I knew I wanted to do something different with my headlights. I ended seeing the frenched headlight kit 2 days ago and I knew that was what I was looking to do. I didn't realized they were welded in. My problem is I've been doing body work on my fenders and wanted to know how much do I have to sand off so it won't disturb the bondo on the fender in order to weld the light bucket to the headlight holes in the fenders?

If you use heat dam (or heat sink) putty you can weld close to your filler without burning it. One brand is "Hot Dam" sold by many welding supply places. Google to read more about it.

    Rico,

The answer to your question depends on what welding process you are using, GTAW, GMAW or ?? and how much grinding you'll be doing. As you no doubt know the better your skills are, the lower the heat input.

I'd grind all filler away at least two inches from where the weld will be made, then use coilover's heat sink suggestion too.

Better safe than sorry. The last thing you want is cracked filler rearing it's ugly head on down the pike.

FWIW, IMO the stock set-up looks good on a mostly stock appearing body... unless you are planning to do a bunch of other mod's too then the frenched headlights look good, if that makes sense. You know the old saying "One thing leads to another."

    Thanks for the help guy's
I will look up the heat putty.

    Thanks for the link Blue

Roadster, Really it's one of the only things I wanted to change since I don't have the experience or knowledge to do much else when it comes to custom work. That's why I thought the lights would change the look without a bunch of work. I was going to add a roll pan in front, but I found out that has to be welded too. So I'm thinking of finding the bumper to the truck shortening it a little and going with that :)

Edit: I am curious what it would look like with the original trim rings painted the same color as the truck? That could be one option
