Hi guys! Been working on the truck, mostly removing good old Texas mud from below. Another weekend and I'll be ready to hit the frame under the cab with Rustoleum!! I decided it was time to pull the oil pan and clean things out and assumed with the engine cold and old oil it would take a week to drain. When I pulled the plug I got a big surprise the oil that came out flowed more like dirty diesel than engine oil. I'd say 6 or 7 quarts came out. It could be someone filled the engine with cutting oil? or somehow gasoline mixed into the oil? Anyone ever hear of anything like this before?
You could be getting gasoline dilution. On many engines if the fuel pump diaphragm splits it will pump gas into the oil pan. It is not too uncommon. Three quick tests are first to smell to detect gas odor, rub between thumb and finger to if it's still a lubricant or just liquid, and since it's thinned by nearly 40% (if it's with gas) a teaspoon full might readily ignite even cold, which pure cold oil won't. I doubt if it is carb related because that much excess fuel dumping into the intake would make clouds of black smoke and probably foul plugs. You need to find the problem because it can be bad news.
I had the same problem a couple of years back with my 235. I thought I had found a magic engine because every day when I checked the oil level it kept going up. FInally some relief from having to import oil from overseas. All I would need to do was just dump a quart each day and sell it. Alas, it did turn out to be a bad fuel pump as Evan said. The new oil I had put in had a very thin consistency, smelled heavily of gas, and the color shifted from golden to tannish. Luckily the engine wasn't running since I was having other problems, so I didn't end up with any loud bangs or flames.
What They Said ! So when you fill it up with fresh oil and get it running , don't hit the highway and chamge it _HOT_ as soon as you can .
Funny oil??? Guys, thanks!!! Fortunately, this engine has run less than a hour over the last 20+ years so hopefully there's no damage to the guts. When I get it running again (should be the week after Christmas) I'll change the oil a couple of times to make sure nothing residual stays in. REALLY APPRECIATE THE HELP (I was a little stumped at how that much gas could have made it to the crankcase)
