Hi All, I haven't asked a question lately, so here goes.... I pulled the gas tank out over the weekend, and yuck!!! Lots of black stuff! I dumped the old gas out and there was about 2 cups of black sediment in there. I washed it out with water, many times and big chunks of it came out. I looked inside and it is pretty bad. Should I consider it a goner and get a new one? Update on the overall progress: Changed the oil to get all the diesel fuel out. Boy, talk about a gusher! I wasn't expecting that much to come out and not that consistancy! Replaced the hydraulic lifters, adjusted the valves, changed the coil, points, condensor, and plugs. Poured a little gas in the carb and she roared to life! My 3 1/2 year old son has been "helping" me work on it and he was sitting in the cab when it started. He was just as excited as I was. Good Job Daddy! It started! Now every time I mention that I am going to start it, he rolls into the cab. Thanks ALL for your help!!! Howard
Howard ; Run the engine no load utnil it's fully warmed up and change the oil and filter again ~ failure to do so will cause it to toss a rod bearing soon as you begin driving it . new fuel tanks suck and usually leak to boot , get some Phosphoric Acid and dilute it a little bit with distilled water (Jasco Metal Etch , Sno-Bol , etc. @ OSH Hwe.) and swish it 'round inside the tank for a couple days , toss in some clean sheet metal screws or a box of BB's to scrub loose the really nasty stuff ~ shake the tank until your arms feel like they'll fall off then shake it some more... DO NOT let anyone talk you into using Muriatic Acid (swimming pool acid) !!! it WILL ruin the tank ! only Phosphoric Acid won't eat the good metal . Consider using a POR 15 tank lining kit once it's 1000 % perfectly clean and rust free . Or a couple Moto tank lining kits from your local dirt bike shop . it is critical to keep turning the tank both in cleaning and lining so the liquid spreads out and coves _all_ the inside , not just puddles in the bottom .
