Okay, I found a 54 GMC 1 1/2 ton (says 350 on the hood) on its way to the crusher today. The guy says he will let it sit in the yard with a for sale sign for about a month then, if no one buys it it goes to the crusher. It is rough. However, it has a running 6 cylinder engine and a near perfect radiator. We negotiated around for a while and he has agreed that, if it does not sell before going to the crusher that he will pull the radiator and the engine with everything on it for $150. Alls I have to do is go get it and it is only about 4 mile from my house. So, what do you think? Thumbs up or thumbs down? BTW, what is it that you call these engines, Nate? Gater
Allow me~ Why they're called L-O-N-G motors, of course... Get it Gater! That way you'll be locked into getting a GMC truck. Nate said these engines really are longer than Chevy blocks. IIRC (how 'bout that, Nate?) You can put them in a Chevy frame, but you'll have to move the radiator forward... (?) Just get a G, G!
Sounds like a good deal. You can tell what size engine it is by the numbers on the flat area next to the distributer(first three numbers) I'm guessing a 248, But you never know, might get lucky and snag a 302. Parts for the 54-55 are hard to come by. Hot items are guage clusters, glove box doors, original fan switches(toggle switch in the center upper area of the dash) Chris
L O N G M O T O R Envy ! ..Is what I'm having right now You'll need the core support too , and the upper and lower baffles . Maybe he'll cut the front of the frame off for you and let you drag the whole mess home? one can only dream . GO for this deal ! . I'd say offer him $250.00 to strip it silly and you can sell off the rest , gauge pods , hood emblems , glove box door etc. ~ anything that's even the slightest bit different can be sold to recoup your initial investment . Tell him you've got SWMBO to O.K. the $250.00 right now but she'll soon kill the deal...... JUMP ON THIS !
