O.K. , there's a _complete_ 1970 C-30 Chevy flatbed truck with the wonderful 292 long stroke , thinwall engine and a SM420 tranny and dual rear wheels... whole truck is in for parts , too bad they won't sell it . it was an impound so everything is there and this engine isn't all covered in grease and dirt... Near it is a 1975 GMC 6000 Series schoolbus with a romping stompng 454 C.I.D. V-8 engine , these are getting hard to find and this P-A-P only gets $250.00 for the entire engine ! I just know there's some Hot Rodder out there who needs this engine for thier Chevlle or to re-power a brand 'F' truck , as surely no one in thier right mind would ever yank a good running Stovebolt mill out of an AD truck...... Pick-A-Part 3333 So. Peck Road Monrovia , Ca. 91016 Good luck hunting guys ! (and gals too )
1970 sm420 Nate The tranny info I have read says the sm420 was standard equipment on 3/4ton and one ton GM trucks from 1947 through 1967. You found a 1970 sm420? With the reverse light switch available only in '67? How cool is that? If you pull the 292, please send put the sm420 on the bus to Port Arthur! I love parading my truck in granny gear. Everyone else is riding their brakes, and Thunder just walks along with the band. No sway bar needed. Jim
' Late Model ' SM420 Muncie Tranny Jim ; I'm not sharp on the " newer " trucks but I know I once found a 1969 C-10 with the SM420 and the reverse light switch on an ex City truck in Arizona junkyard , yes I bought the lid and still have it , not yet installed tho' . I suppose it is possible this was a 1979 model year , it had the marker lights in the front fenders and said " 1970 " in a hand written ID paint on the truck... That means little as most yard apes are lucky to know if it's a Chevy or Dodge.... One thing I know for dead certain is : GM made many things longer than they advertised them....look at the 235 C.I.D. engine , they stopped installing it in 1962 but built them well into 1964 that I know of any likely longer.... I know Dodge used the SM420 tranny for many years too... I'm still kaputi from my Moto accident and so won't be yanking any engines nor trannies for a while yet.... sorry buddy . I could prolly get $150.00 for that lid with switch in ready to install condition , I know many like me who'd kill for one O.K. stop laughing ! when I began spinning wrenches 1970 pickups weren't on the drawing boards yet
Good news ! You'll be glad to know , I went back to that P-A-P yard to-day and the 1067 C-30 truck has been stripped silly ~ the entire running gear is gone along with the dash pod.... I figured I'd take a look and if the tranny lid was still there I'd give some guy $5.00 to remove it for me... I'm glad someone took this good , hard to find powertrain complete . The 1976 454 C.I.D. V-8 is still there in the schoolbus tho'.....
