    Thought to ponder..

My harmonic balancer has a very slight wobble. Is that going to create a problem?

I pressed it on my self and it appeared straight. Possible its coming off?

I've heard they can come off, but my brother (who is a mechanical engineer) says that it's not likely. You could damage your crankshaft or bearings by the wobbling though. But who am I to talk though my balancer has been wobbling for a month or so now...been to cheap to buy a puller that I'll use once:rolleyes:

You really need to buy a installer tool to get those on properly and straight. We had one come off of a IMCA modified race car. Luckily it was while driving thru the pits and it didn't take out the radiator. However, when it came off, it bunged up the crank snout that we were able to file down and install a new balancer. Now we use a bolt with a thick washer on the end of the crank, locktited in, and drilled the bolt for safety wire to help keep the balancer on. So the answer is yes, they can come off. Speedway motors has a inexpensive harmonic balancer installer tool that is ok for occasional use.

    235 harmonic balancer

I found a 235 46800 miles from a granny donner car biscane however the mounting system is different using side mounts the 235 I6 is a new creature to me.I have always worked V8 before now however I need to remove the balancer to install the motor mount plate behind the timming cover surely this has some type of retention device on the balancer or am I just making it hard ?

I was able to borrow a harmonic balancer puller from my local Auto Zone. As I recall, I had to be a bit creative in how to use it on my engine.

If the balancer is wobbling it is probably no longer good.

If your crankshaft is like mine is has no bolt hole for the balancer. This poses a slight problem if you are going to use a balancer installer tool. I carefully drilled and tapped the front of my crankshaft mainly so I could bolt the balancer down.

Your other option is to heat the balancer in the oven and tap it on with a hard plastic hammer or rubber hammer.

oh, and yeah, they DO come off.

my daughter had a 97 Ford F-150 and her harmonic balancer came plumb off destroying the belt in the process. luckily it didn't take anything else with it.
