    Hei 4 216/235/261

    Yep ;

It's a dandy idea and will cure many running ailments (hard starting , wierd missing , " shooting ducks " etc.) .

looks kinda odd though , I prefer the Pertronix ' Ignitor ' set up , it goes inside the original dizzy and has no black box to blow up or overheat .

Remember to ALWAYS gap the spark plugs ! they DO NOT come
    ' pre gapped ' .

    HEI uses a .050" gap .

O.K. , you understand this one WILL NOT FIT a 216/235 or 261 engine ? this is for Thinwall InLine 6 cylinder engines made from 1963 to end of production in 1981 (U.S.)........

It looks O.K. to me , you'll notice he neglects to mention it's Chinese made...

The price is right if you can use it....

The price of a Pertronix kit is $80. The HEI your looking at $69, S&H $10, new plug wires $30 (your old ones won't work), machine hold down flange off housing $25, clamp collar to hold distributor $65 (Speedway part #610-1001) which brings the HEI conversion to around $200. DO NOT just plug HEI into hole factory distributor came out of. If the dizzy shaft engages the oil pump it JUST BARELY does. The drive gear will mesh with the cam gear so the engine will start and run but the oil pump is not fully engaged and heavy oil and cold starts can break the ears off the oil pump drive shaft. We have used HEI's in 235/261's since the 70's but always machine off the factory hold down collar so the distributor can drop deeper into the oil pump. To be right a 12 gauge wire needs to be run from the battery terminal on the starter through the switch and onto the "BAT" terminal on the HEI distributor cap. That said, I really like the HEI and fit them to Ford and Chrysler housings long before Davis Industries existed. It is a good system but definitely not less costly than a Pertronix conversion.

    Ron ;

If you go to the Longh Beach Veteran's Stadium Auto Swap Meet , you'll find this distributor modified to suit your vintage engine .

it still looks wonky on an old tech engine but you'll love how it works .

    Ron,
I've been running the petronix for for over two years and made a good number of trips into the Arixona desert without any problems.
    Hope this helps.

I've been running Tom Langdon's HEI for almost 2 years and love it. All OEM parts comes with your choice of coils. It's a small diameter, not one of the big body style dist. ALMOST looks stock.

    Distibutor Hei versus Pertronix.

    Hey guys

Ordered the ignitor last year from Pertronix. Installed the ignitor with partnumber 1168 in the ignition device in my 235 engine , but i could`nt get the engine run properly? Maybe i bought the wrong product ? I kept the old ignition system with rotor fore the time being and the engine runs just fine , but i sould like to try the Pertronix ignitor again and see how it functions!

Should i try another Pertronix ignitor product ?

    Pertronix Ignitor

I have found that it is critical to only use an ingition coil that matches what they want you to use ~ the basic impedance of the primary circuit will make or break the Ignitor system .

I cannot tell you what coil you need but they can by you simply asking
    " what polarity & ohm coil do I use with the Ignitor P/N XXXX ? " .

Then we/I can tll you what coil to order or how to measure your current coil to see if it's suitable .

(BTW : I'm rather fond of using coils I find on abandoned cars , either they work or not and once cleaned up and re-painted , no one knows where it came from, only that my rig always runs perfect)

If , OTOH , you had it running but it just ran poorly , be aware that often the installation of a Pertonix system wll require a serious amount of fiddling to get the timing mback to ball on pointer @ 700 or less RPM's....

This drove me nearly crazy (or crazier) in my Metropolitan Nash

    Pertronix Ignitor

    Good morning Nate

First of all, thank you for all good wishes for the coming year and for your many good contributions towards the chevy truck talk blogg. Hope that you can start motorbyke driving again this year ? The set up i have is mentioned down below except from the HEI distributor, using an tradional Delco GM product with rotor and ign. points now. Hope you can give me some advice on this one.

Ok. Lets see what i have here ; I just read what is on the pakages starting with the coil spesifications.

Coil; High performence coil gives 40.000 volts , 3.0 ohm , oil filledfor cooling.
On the package (coil) Pertronix recommends using HEI distributors
in this combination because of better improvements?

Spark plug wires; 7.0 stock, dual currant paths, low 500 ohm pr.foot resistance.

Ignitor; Operating voltage ; 8v-16v DG, RPM range 0-15.000,coil resistance; 1.5 ohms or more.

    Ignitor

O.K. , It appears to me you're maybe all set with the correct parts maybe) , what specifically was the running problem you had when the Ignitor was installed ? .

You use -either- the ignitor -or- an HEI dizzy but you cannot use both..

Evan might know more than I here but I'll help if I can . If I say a confusing or unclear thing , don't hesitate to ask again & again until you understand the answer , the guys here will chime in too .

I have several Motos awaiting my return , just yesterday my son said he'd like to repair the crashed one and maybe ride it a bit , I can't do repairs until the Court thing is settled though  I told him to begin looking for parts now so we'll have our ducks in a row when it's time .

Knowing you alls has been a great help in overcoming my difficulties since Sept. 2008 .

    HEI Dizzy 216/235/261 NEW

I must say , thisloks like a good deal , I realize the module etc. is prolly Cinese but it's the standard V-8 module so it should have NO troubles running perfectly in a 6 Banger forever....

You'll need to ascertain you have a solid 12 volt feed to it at all times .

It's a true one wire deal, the other two wires are for additional ground and a tachometer feed , pretty sweet .

I only wish it wasn't so modern looking , then maybe I'd try one instead of the cast iron lump on my 49's Cast Iron Wonder , it's still soldiering on nearly 60 years later , I change the points once in a great while but if your dizzy has any side play in the shaft , this is prolly the singlemost easiest , cheapest and biggest bang for your buck you'll ever do .

This HEI dizzy should force your truck to roar into life even after it's flooded ,
frozen , boiled over etc. , etc. due to the HUGE sparks it throws .

I don't know if anyone makes solid core , non resistor wires for it? same application as say a 1976 Chevy Nova with 250 CID 6 cylinder engine BTW .
