Thanks but how can i be sure , on your link it's a 75 and in this link http://www.nastyz28.com/sbchevy/sblock.php listed in a previous post on the forum it can be both 75 and 76 !

I have tried all other website listed here in others topics, always the same date begin 75 end 76 for the same number 355909.

Do you think on this pict it can be the year i'm not sure to read 75? can you confirm me if you manage to read ? in this case i'll be sure of a 262 , if 76 it's 305 !

Thanks John.

Engine ID

You are looking at the raised casting # there (good pic BTW) , what you need to find and post up , is the stamped in engine serial number , that will break out what it is exactly .

i suppose the serial is the last pict on my first post, no ?
grrr to hard to read , i read 1R438572 not sure

(sorry i'm french and have bad english)

Nate is right! What you need to find is a set of letters and numbers that are stamped into the block, not cast into it when the engine was poured. It should start with a letter, probably S, T, or V which will tell you where it was made followed by 4 numbers which indicate the month and day that the engine was built followed by a combination of letters and/or numbers that will tell you the exact application for that engine.

Look for it near the oil filter boss, or near the bellhousing, as those 2 places were commonly used. Remember it is stamped into the block.

Happy hunting!

Ken

The #'s you are looking for are located on the passenger side of the block at the front of the engine behind the water pump and in front of the head on a pad. The #'s will be stamped in to the pad, unless the block has been decked then they might be gone....Big Tim

really the firing order ! cool !

Ok thanks guy, i go hunting again today! and come back to tel you, thanks :-)

262 or 305

Here is some info that might help.....

The 262 was introduced in 1974 and discontinued mid-1976. It has a 3.671-inch bore and has a 3.1 inch stroke. On the first pic at the top of this thread, it looks like a 10/75 date. If thats correct, then its a 262. If its 10/76, then thats past mid-1976 and its a 305.
