I'm new to electrical, trying to figure out if I can rewire just the brakelites and license plate light or do I have to buy an entire wiring harness kit and do it all? I just need brake lights and headlights for now to run around town.

You just need two wires run to the back. A brown wire goes from the light switch ( it MUST go on the terminal marked "T", "TL", or "Tail") to your left tail light first then continues on to the license plate light and finally to the right tail light. The second wire goes from the the brake light switch to both the right and left brake light. If your going to the work of running new wires I'd run 4 new wires back. Pink to the sender on the fuel tank, brown to the tail and ID light, a yellow to the left brake light, and a green to the right. If you decide to use turn signals someday the correct color coded wires will be in place.
