Hello everybody, this is my first time posting although I've been reading this forum for over five years,it has been a great source of information. my problem is this, I have a '57 1/2 ton, drive it year round(live outside of Chicago) for the past five years it has been a good reliable truck up to three weeks ago,it starts just fine warms up,but now when I put it in gear and start driving it bogs down chugs along either like its getting too much fuel or not enough, cannot go over 15mph but idles fine when you come to a stop.I have a power assist brake unit in it from this site, changed from generator to altenator, have a pertronix electronic conversion in the distributor, the only thing that seems different is after it idles when I push on the brake pedal it seems to suck all the vacuum out of the engine and almost dies. any ideas would be greatly appreciated.thanks, wlshdrmr
Telling us what engine you've got will help . If it's a 235 (6 cylinder) it sounds like your valve are tight and need adjusting , might be a leak in the brake booster too ~ pinch off the line to test . Points set to 33° dwell and ignition timing to ball on pointer @ hot idle , no vacuum to the advance . Once in a while the Bakelite insulator onder the carby just up & cracks too , killing the idle .
235's don't have timing chains..... He never specified what engine he has . If it's a V-8 and jumped time (loose chain) it'll have more troubles than stalling when hot
sorry, my engine is a 235,turns out I replaced the carb, put in hotter plugs it fires right up. I found on the old carb that it had a gasket under it between the carb and the insulator, blocking the vacuum hole from the manifold, thanks for the responses.wlshdrmr
