OK as of last post I did swap the rear ends, the torque tube is out. Here's the question.......I pulled the back pan off to drain the gear oil cause it needs a new seal and gear oil anyway and I want to pull the axle. If I push that pin out of the center will the two gears on the ends fall out?? If so are they easy to put back in? The reason I'm going to pull the axles is because I'm going to switch the vacuum plates so I can use my original emergency setup and brakes. The drums for the two rears are perfect match. Thanks for any help Robert
The gears CAN'T fall out unless you rotate an axle till the gears are lined up with the windows in the carrier. I usually do this to get them out of the way to remove the "C" clips. Once the pin is out, and sometimes a rectangular block on some rears, you push the axle in toward the center section and the "C" clips will fall out or slip off the ends of the axle easily. The axle can then be pulled out. When you put the gears back in they have to be directly across from each other and then rotate them back in line with the pin holes. If there is a cup shaped shim on the gear it has to go on the gear, not the carrier to rotate it into place.
wish me luck Thanks evan i will try this. I dont want those little gears at the end of the pin to fall out. Robert
