electrical problems!!! my battery keeps going dead. I checked for shorts. There are none. So now I need to check to see whether my alternator is charging. Can you tell me how to do that while the alternator is still in the vehicle? I've got a small tester that I can use. I just need to know where to hook my leads. There are two posts on my alternator. One has the hot wire going to it.(I'm assuming it's the hot wire. It's probably 10 or 12 gauge.) The other has the resistor lead going to it. And there are two wires that plug together into a slot. I don't want to hook my leads up wrong and short out the alternator, or maybe something worse. So if you can help, please let me know how to check to see if it's charging. thanks!!!
The easiest way to test the alternator is to put your test leads on the battery. It should read 13.8 volt when the truck is running.
that other guy was right. but if you want to test it under a load, just take it to autozone. they hook it up to a machine and it's free.
