Anyone know of a source for the rubber gasket material that is on the batttery box, tool box covers on a panel truck. I need to replace mine and can't find a replacement.
I am going to be in the same situation myself. I found this on our host's site, Battery hole cover gasket item 43-311 But the tool box covers, I am thinking about buying additional battery gaskets, cutting them, using 2 to make the size needed, and reconnecting them with silicone or something? Did you remove your tool box lid? I want to so that I can get it cleaned and sealed from rust, but don't want to tear it up. Any pics? These guys get all warm and fuzzy with pics. (of trucks that is)
Rubber Solution Rustydog, I guess I'll do the same and splice some of the battery box gaskets. I did remove the top of the seat pan so I could treat the rust and have it painted. I don't have any pictures of it and the whole truck and the seat parts are at the dipper/stripper. I just drilled out the spot welds around the edge and it came off pretty easy.
I thought it was welded on, that's why I didn't pry on it. Though I would tear it up. Now I know. Thanks. Are you in Clermont? There are some parts on ebay for a 49. http://sarasota.craigslist.org/pts/4087101247.html Not sure why it is listed in Sarasota though.
I have some shots of the tool box/seat riser on a 52 Suburban if it would help. I don't know if the panel is the same since the box is only under the drivers side on a suburban. The passenger side is flat floor to let people walk into the back seat(s).
Rusty Dog and Coilover, The suburban is different as Coilover points out. The panel seat riser top is welded on like you thought. I drilled out the spotwelds to remove it and treat the rust underneath it. That craigslist listing expired so I don't know what it was for. Rusty Dog, I'm not to far from you. I'm over in Lake Placid. I took the Panel body and parts to Wauchula to be dipped. I think it's called Klassic car Depot or somehthing like that. Daren there is a real good guy with lots of help on how to prep for paint and stuff. It's expensive but beats doing all work myself.
The ad was for parts from a 49 panel truck. Mostly just running gear stuff, so i figured it was someone doing a rebuild and they were swapping to a v8 with modern axles. You are going thru a rebuild, so I just couldn't imagine there were 2 this close doing similar stuff at the same time. My bad. Mine is being blasted as we speak. Pop's Painting in Lakeland does large commercial stuff ( up to 35 tons!) and the guys will do cars on their days off. Pretty much the going rate of other places I have checked. most cars are between $6-800. For mine, I am going to be closer to $1200. I am having almost everything done, frame, interior, exterior, wheels and all the small parts that can tolerate being blasted. They also do powder coating. They are doing my original split rims for $75 each. and 2 separate colors. That's a little less than regular, they gave me a break since they were doing all the extra work for me.st couldn't imagine there were 2 this close doing similar stuff at the same time. My bad.
For my battery box, I just got some thin weather striping from home depot that fit the gap and cut it to length. Has been working great for the past 5 years or so
Ah, Man... wish I had seen the ad. I'm always looking for spare parts that are better than what I have on hand. Wolf, If I hadn't already ordered the other gaskets I might have tried the Home Depot fix. I hope the ones I ordered are not just that soft foam rubber that reverts in a couple of hot summers like we have here. Now I have to search through the parts and see if I can find the battery box cover and if it's usable. Then I can put gaskets on all three at once and save so time.
