I am wiring a new ignition on a 55 firsts series and who ever wired the old well it's a rats nest..... Any one have a readable diagram for the ignition... And where do you buy a ( dio.. Something )to put between the alternator and the ignition to keep the battery from draining ?

    Alternator Upgrade

    WELCOME PAIL ! .

The diode isn't really necessary unless you're adding a red alternator light .

As soon as the alternator is spinning over 3,000 RPM's , it'll begin charging and you'll see the ammeter needle move right .

Randy Rundle of 5th Avenue Auto Parts sells a nifty plug that does the job and looks clean to boot .

The ignition is really simple : battery hot lead to one side of the ign. switch , the other side to the coil , gas gauge and heater .

Factory wiring diagrams are dead simple and easy to follow , there's really no need for the $ wiring kits many use , many more use the '47 ~ '49 stock harness (! $100 !) and multi fuse fuse box to very good effect even with AC and modern radios .

Does the wire from alternator hook to the ignition or the ammeter?

The fuel gauge , heater and ofther accessories .

Although I always run a fuse , I never run the radio off the key switch as I often play the radio whilst parked , no point in wasting battery current on other things .

The radio should only need a 5 ampere or smaller fuse .

The ammeter along with the load wires ~ the other ammeter post only has one wire going directly to the hot terminal on the starter .

Do I need a resistor between the alternator on the battery wire that's hooks to the starter. ? And so hook the other alternator wire to the ammeter correct. ? I believe that is my understanding of what you said ... hook it to the load wire post that goes to the ignition ? Thanks Paul

Also would you hook up an inline fuse for the heater... And if so what size? And for the gas gage ? And what size?
