After my 54 ran for 10 minutes, I noticed anti freeze leaking from the bottom of the water pump. After 10 mins of the engine being turned off, alot more was leaking from it than when it was running. Thinking a new seal would do the job, but wanted to ask the forum on there thoughts. New seal or new water pump? Thanks

Well, since you have to take it off anyway, once you have it off and can look at it, the answer might become clear. Good luck!

    leak

Most pumps have a hole at the bottom of the shaft boss on the housing. when the shaft bearing or seal go bad, that is where you see the coolant leaking from. It is not always visible when the pump is on the car as it is usually well hidden by the pulley, etc. I would be willing to bet that is your problem.

    Water Pump Leaks

Engine OFF , take a small mirror and hold it below the fan pulley , above the crank pulley and look at the underside of the water pump ~ there'll be a small round hole , if it's wet or has stains , the pump is shot and should be replaced ASAP before it lets go and ruins your radiator  .

DO NOT trade inn your old water pump until the job is 100 % finished and working to your liking ! .

    Which water pump

Well...that all depends upon which engine you are running and how it was set up in the first place. Lots of these trucks had later 235 engines swapped into them for the 216 that they originally had. So, you have to know what engine you have. Also, many trucks with these newer 235 engines had the water pump with the longer snout so often the radiator supprt was hacked up to allow the radiator to be pushed forward. But, if you have an ORIGINAL 1954 engine, then it is a 235 and everything is set up properly. Best bet is to know which engine you have and order a pump that is specific to the year of manufacture of the engine. Then when you get it in, don't be suprised if it's different than the bad one that was on the engine . That's why Nate said not to toss yours or turn it in for a core charge until the new one is on the truck and running properly.

What determines on a water pump what size pulley you need? 5/8" or 3/8" groove pulley? How would I identify which one I need?
