Hi 65 Chevy truck leak oil where the rear axel meets the differential (see attachment). Can anyone tell me how to seal this? - how much do I have to change? Thanks!
I'm pretty sure that all you have to do is remove the drive-shaft unbolt the yoke and change out the seal. The hard part is doing it with the pinion still in it.
Pull the drive shaft then the yoke. Then take a good size screw driver or seal puller and pry the seal out. When installing the new seal put some Permatex around the outside edge so that it won't leak between the axle housing and the seal. Then hold the seal in place and start tapping it in to place with a hammer. Only tap on the outer corner so that you don't damage the seal. Once it is started tap it down in to place by tapping all the way around the seal so that it go's down evenly and flat. Put a thin coat of grease on the yoke and reinstall. Make sure that when you put the nut back on you use a impact gun to tighten it down until it's tight but don't over tighten the nut and compact the crush sleeve. Just tighten until it is tight and that's it. Make sure you check your oil level....Big Tim
Crush Sleeve and Gear Set Adjustment I need to change my pinion seal also. I asked some questions and did some research. What I was told is similar to what Big Tim listed above. Here goes: First mark the pinion nut/pinion shaft & pinion yoke with a paint line to reset the nut to the same spot it was when putting back together. Use a piece of angle iron, drilled and bolted to the yoke where the u-joint strap goes to hold the yoke in place. Use a large cheater bar to remove the nut. The angle iron needs to be long enough to brace under the frame rail. Use a dead blow hammer to tap off the yoke, you might need a puller if this doesnt work. Pop off the old seal clean the area and use RTV on the new seal around the outside edge, tap on even with block of wood. Clean yoke and use RTV on the splines and install. Reinstall the nut and tighten to paint mark and just a hair past to lock in place. Here's the thread... http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/showthread.php?t=437851&highlight=pinion+seal
