i recently got a new chrome transmission dipstick for my turbo 400 to replace my leaky original one. Well, it's still leaking and i was wondering if i am missing a seal or something? if so where can i get it? i know there is the little o-ring that comes with the kit but when i insert the shaft if rolls up with it. i tried some silicon around the edge but that didn't do the trick.

ANY IDEAS??

Pull the dipstick out and try and see if the OLD O ring ( from the previous dipstick) is still in there.

If so, "carefully" remove the old O ring. Then replace the one on the new dip-stick with a new one. I can't remember if the dipstick on that trans had a retaining bolt. If that is missing, replace it too.

Yea, make sure you have a good o ring on the tube so it can seal.

I had the same problem with my chrome dipstick. I had to replace the original o-ring with a larger one.

I had the exact same difficulty with the chrome one that came on my 69. I had it worked on twice at a Goodyear store we use, and it started leaking again each time. Then I tried it myself with the help of a mechanic friend of mine. We kept trying different o rings until we finally found one that we could barely get in the hole without pushing it off the indention in the tube - even put a little grease on it to get it in - but was still relatively tight, and used high temp silicone around the top. I thought I had it, but within a week it was leaking again. I finally went to a local performance shop and bought a flexible braided metal tube by Lokar. It fits better and has double o rings. It has not leaked since, and that has been at least a month. One draw back - it cost me over $50, ouch. But I didn't know what else to do. good luck
