Hi, I'm new. Now that the formalities are out of the way, I had a question for you super geniuses. I've always wanted an older Chevy project, and I found the one pictured below. I know little about it, aside from the fact that it has sat since 1980. It is a 1965 Chevy C-10 pickup truck, and it has the original 283 V8, with automatic transmission(I don't know what the transmission is, I just know it came with it). From what I can tell it is a pretty straight body, the passenger side is a little wavy though. It has a clear title. I can buy it for about $750 give or take. So the question becomes, worth it, or not? Thanks for all the help.
What do the floors, rockers, drip rails, and hinge pillar look like ? Also, what do you plan on doing with it? If there is any trace of rust in the roof or hinge pillars,,, run away.. If you plan on driving it as is ? $750 sounds very reasonable if it is running. If you plan on restoring it or rodding it then check for rot in the usual places. I can see from the pictures rust at the rear of the front fenders, bottom of door ,, etc. If the floors and rockers are pretty bad then assume you will be putting $4,000 to $5,000 into it to get it back to where it's ready to paint. As a safe number assume when you are done with suspension , steering, brakes, engine and running gear and body work you will have invested $10,000. If you farm that work out expect the number to rise... Val
Check those spots that Dval was talking about closely for rust, the body lookes good for the ages, windows look good around the truck, its very hard to find a longbed stepside they are rare like shortbed fleetsides. The truck is worth $750.00,would make a great project with time and $$ If its not rusted to bad in those key spots DVal talking about these trucks are a excellent hobbys to get into,Welcome to the form The 283 chevy is a good motor they last a long time if you treat them right one of the best motors chevy put out in the 60s.
Take a look at this web site and look at all the patch pannels they sell and compair to the ones that need to be replaced. If it only has surface rust that is okay but if the rust is flaking it is gone. Inspect the roof area at the front windshield it looks pretty rusty. If that is shot then it is only a parts truck. The motor has seen better days. It looks as if has been left to the elements. The radiator didn't have a cap on it and no air cleaner. It is possible you might have some little friends living inside the motor. At the very least it will need to be rebuilt. Maybe a GM 350 replacement motor would be cheaper. To get it rolling hit each drum with a hammer. When you replace the brake shoes spray everything down with water to keep the dust down. It is more than likely ASBESTOS lined! Do not hit it with the air hose wet it and wipe it clean. Once it is in you it's there for life.
