Little help please. Brake master cylinder is leaking at the firewall area. Seems like an easy enough fix, so do we just rebuild the old unit or as cheap as the new part is, should I just replace the whole thing? What do you all think? Thanks
If you buy a rebuilt MC from one of the major chains you usually get a "life time" warrenty with it. If it fails again, return it for another. OR,, just buy a new one...
I agree, I wish I had upgraded when I replaced my MC a few months ago. My"new" single MC was less than $20 at the parts store, I wouldn't mess with trying to rebuild it.
I didn't even think about upgrading to the dual, but that's why I joined this forum; to get and maybe share some ideas. I appreciate the responses. Is the dual upgrade an easy replacement? Any modifications or does it bolt right in? Sal
It's pretty much a bolt in. You will need to adapt a new brake line from the master cylinder for the front brakes. The thrust rod to the pedal "may" need tweaking too. But it's not too bad really. Bleeding the brakes will probably take longer than installing the new MC and brake line ! dv
Might as well get a brake booster and front disk brake conversion too while you are at it; its only money
i have a 66 gmc custom cab,,these trucks had power drums i belive,,but not sure if the master cylinder wuz single or dual,,i bought a new dual and dont want power brakes,,do i need to buy an extra brake line piece or wut? any help is gud thanxxx....
btw 'dads 66' luv that photo,,,are those 20's? thats jus wut i wanna put on my truck leave all stock but sum nice rims,,,and is ur truck drum all round?
Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe you will have to run new brake lines with a proportioning valve with a dual mc setup; since the front and rear brakes are operating somewhat independently.
actually you dont need a preportioning vavle or wut ever fur drums because the braking pressure between the system is equall,,you kno drums? for disc brakes u do need one i kno that for a fact,,if its disc/drum mines all drums and its non power set up,,,just dual cylinder manual braking,,so anyways i thnk i jus need two new front lines right?
Hope all had great holidays, now that the new year is here we may complete our project. Went with a new single M/C for now as cheap as it was. Hope to some day "grow up" and get disc's all around, but for now it works fine. Thats true, you dont need a proportioning valve but if you use a proportioning valve you will get more braking in the front and less in the rear, so even with drums your brakes will perform better. And yes, you will need to change up the lines.
ok kewl thanks,,yea i jus recived my dual master cylinder today,,and i ordered a new wiring harness fur the front,N engine compartment,,they didnt send my 'adjuster rod ' tho that comes with the master cylinder,,had to email them so will C on that,,anywayz,,yea i never hurd of using the proportioning vavle on drums,,soundz gud tho,,but im'a pass,,i have to dig up a flywheel n bolts at a wrecking yrd,,other than that jus gett'n her pieced together to run n stop BUT SAFELY no crap jobs LOL,,,i wanna put 22's on the truck later,,not sure wut lug nuts to use,,or size...also go'n with flowmaster single chamber mufflers hehe,,wud like a mild cam n thrr but idk will c...
oooppss furgot 2 ask,,,thats wut wuz stump'n me wuz the brake lines,,the lil 'T' fitting how do i find one fur dual set up or do i jus gotta order a complete set up from a catalog? im thnk'n bout that anyways,,but nuth'n fancey jus the steel brake lines,,they shud carry dual set up non-pwr ,,i thnk classicparts does or brothers cant member i have all three catalogs,,LMC is mainly body parts,,idk thanks fur the help n more help is much need'd well opions that is,,heehe
Any brake supply shop will have that T fitting, you should only need the brake lines to plumb the front brakes. there HAS tobe a few brake shops in Bakersfield ! ;~) Pick up some new rubber flex brake lines as well... dv p.s. It's up to you, but ,,, about the supplier who is not your "Sister's" ? You can get everything that they supply HERE at Classic Parts, only the quality is better and the service here is WAY better... Just my opinion...
ok i will check into 'the supplier' on here ,,,but yea that'd be kewl if i wud jus have to change to i guess 'a different T-fitting' or wut,,been a while since i wrenched on classic rides,,but i used to own 2 chevy trucks a 62 short bed,,n a 65 long bed,,sold those n luv'd when i found this 66 gmc,,anyways,,i usually dont get stuff here n twn,,alotta pplz work at places and dont kno thrr stuff! ahaha,,i went threw hell asking ppl bout a driveline,,when yet i found one myself at a wrecking yrd outta a mid 90's chevy suburban,,i have to change the rearends joint were the driveline mounts,,but i found one 'online' that fits 60-66 chevy/gmc trucks,,same bolt size but upgraded so will b nice,,,still waiting on the pushrod that wuz supposed to come with my dual master cylinder,,welp im off to check on my truck dwn at the shop,,hehe thrrs a homeless cat that sleeps n thrr thank gorsh he/she didnt mess up my truck ,,,hahaaa...L8 pplz....
single to dual master cylinder question... hey wanted to kno do i have to change the T-fitting were the master cylinder line runs from master cylinder to the brake lines? not sure,,or ?? any help wud b nice thanxxx...
