I have been wanting to build one more six cylinder AD while eye sight and a worn out body will still partially function. My dirty little secret was the engine was going to be a 225 Slant 6 Chrysler or the 240/300 Ford. There are several reasons including the oiling system and seven main bearings but the big reason is both these engines have twelve port heads which is essential to port injection. After driving my wife's car in the mountains with no decline in performance I'm just not going to use a carburetor anymore so the siamesed intake ports on the Chevy's and GMC's ruled them out---until now. I used a customers Trailblazer with the Atlas I6 in it to trailer a 57 Chevy to the alignment shop and I'm sold. An absolutely whisper quiet engine with power equal to many V8's. Even better it will be all Chevy.
Evan, I was unaware the 4.2L was called the Atlas. I strongly considered this same engine for Penny when gas prices were pushing over $4.00 some years back. A 254 CI, making 270hp, and 275tq is a pretty sweet 6. A late-model injected I-6 would certainly be "unusual" in old iron. I look forward to seeing it!
Made a deal on a 2005 Trailblazer that is a roll over with 105,000 miles. Will start and drive if you're really short or scrunch down in the seat. Learned my lesson years ago that on fuel injection conversions it's almost mandatory to have the COMPLETE donor vehicle. Measured the Trailblazer engine and it's one inch shorter than a 235. Also has a mechanical fan, I'm surprised, but is a clutch fan which is considerably longer than the 235. Probably will have to go electric or move the radiator forward---no big deal. I hope a BUNCH of the wires, hoses, ducts etc can be eliminated as the engine is nearly hidden from view especially since it's recessed back into the firewall over a foot or so in the SUV.
Bill, It's a rear wheel drive so they use the 4L60E trans. As far as pictures go one of you is going to have to take my hand and very SLOWLY lead me through how to upload from camera to computer on Windows 8. My camera has a bunch of pictures on the card and if I don't get smarter soon I'll carry my old XP machine down to the house in town where there is fiber optic broadband and post a few. The XP won't sign onto dial up anymore and it's too old for this plug in Net Zero "Stick" thing to work in it. Believe me, between the old and the new I've been connected to India enough times I think I'm getting fluent in Indie or whatever it is they speak---I know it's not English.
Glad you learned the picture trick! How is this project going? This is a very interesting idea and I look forward to hearing/seeing how it turns out!
Cool Project ! FWIW ; Chrysler makes F.I. add on kits for the millions of old OHV InLine 6 Banger Jeep engines out there.....
Change of plans, the 52 owner got a deal (free) on a prettied up 350 so now it looks like the engine is going to find a home in a 59 short step. Bringing it by the shop Monday so maybe build pictures will be forthcoming. The owner is a bit understandably antsy because I can't give him a firm price since it's a first timer for all concerned. The wiring components cost and labor are the sticking points. I told him he's welcome to be there or even pitch in but I just don't know what picadillos might rise up so the ball is in his court.
