I am working on the bedsides of my '56 pickup and have welded in a new section on the panel. Unfortunately it got a littel too warm and there is some warpage that has occurred. On my door panel when I had a similar problem I heated the metal and then hit it 3-4 times with a pointed object and then quenched the metal with water. This created a "divot" in the door which I was able to fill with body filler. The inside of the door will never be seen so no one can tell that is what I did to shrink the metal.

On the bedsides it is a different problem. Both sides of the panel will be visible and I can't use that same technique, and shrinking hammers don't do a good enough job. Can you heat the metal up and quench it quickly with water and have it shrink some? If that would work I could use that method. Otherwise HELP?

    Thanks,

    Duane

If you go to any automotive paint/body suppies store they will have a shrinking hammer what this does when you hit the metal it has a swirl pattern and it will actually turn a little bit and will pull the metal and take out the slack- it you talk to any body shop they will tell you about this hammer- it runs about $80
